Chapter 752 · Volume 1

The Old Tortoise Breaks the Seal

Lu Bai chuckled, "Thinking of saving him?"
He was happy to see things play out this way.
His grandfather had said that the Great-Grandfather had returned, but he couldn't see him. That red-haired boy looked the part, but he was only a lookalike.
He wasn't afraid of a wasted effort if he entered the fray rashly; he was afraid of getting himself killed in the process. He didn't believe for a second that these two "good friends"—the Angel Girl and the Ant Old Man, who usually called him brother—would lift a finger to help him if he fell into the water while deep in the darkness.
The Angel Girl didn't hide her intentions either, asking instead, "Can you truly say you aren't tempted?"
The Ant Old Man didn't deny it, merely saying with a smile, "No rush, no rush. Even if we were to act, now is not the time."
"Old man, what exactly do you mean?"
The Ant Old Man said meaningfully, "It is easy to add flowers to a brocade, but difficult to deliver charcoal in a snowstorm."
The two of them understood instantly.
His meaning was that they should wait until the youth was in true despair, preferably on the brink of life and death, before stepping in to save him. Only then would he be truly grateful. That was the first point.
Furthermore, letting those monsters wear themselves out first would allow the three of them to swoop in and reap the benefits once the enemies were exhausted. That was the second point.
It was a brilliant calculation that suited the desires of all three.
"That sounds perfect!"
"Old ginger is indeed spicier; the ancients did not lie!"
While they were busy with their schemes, the onlookers among the clouds were just watching the show for entertainment. Even if some were tempted, they didn't have the courage to snatch food from the mouth of an Ancestral Spirit.
Li Shuhe saw the sword array being engulfed by dark techniques, and her heart fell into chaos. In the midst of their evenly matched struggle, she began to fall into a slight disadvantage.
She was powerful, but that was in the past. After being a dark creature for ten thousand years, this body was simply not enough to allow her to display her full strength from back then.
Her combat power was naturally greatly diminished.
The Sovereign had promised to stall for half an hour, but given the current situation, she certainly wouldn't be able to resolve her own trouble within that time.
What she feared had indeed happened.
Among the dark creatures, someone had recognized that tower and seen through Xu Xian's identity. Thus, this slaughter was laid out before the dawn.
Four Ancestral Spirits had appeared, and three of them were ranked very high in the sequences.
Aside from the First Spirit and the Leader of the Sequence in the Ancestral Spirit Hall, the one she faced was the seventh-ranked expert in this Greedy Realm.
The Sovereign was facing the third, fifth, and eighteenth.
In the time it took for a single stick of incense to burn, the situation shifted from a stalemate to a clear decline. The Sovereign maneuvered among them, occasionally being wounded by the divine abilities of the three. Although the victor had not yet been decided, he was clearly no longer able to hold the three of them back.
Sensing that things were going south, the Sovereign didn't hesitate for a moment. He actively engaged the three, fighting as he retreated, forcing the battle closer to the hunting ground.
In a very short amount of time, the chaotic battle of the four shifted from the west of the former Cangzhou to the sky above the hunting ground.
The attacks of the four terrifying figures naturally fell into the eyes of the observers.
The sight of a single unknown being fighting three Ancestral Spirits made the beings on the side of the Immortal Land gasp in shock.
The three Immortal Kings, in particular, were stunned to see the newcomer's cultivation level; he hadn't even entered the Immortal King stage yet.
To fight three Ancestral Spirits alone without even being an Immortal King—especially when one of them was the commander of the Expeditionary Army they knew well, that wench, the Spirit Sequence Three—the three of them were secretly alarmed.
"Who is this person?"
"I don't know."
"He's even more ridiculous than that boy..."
"Maybe they're from the same sect."
"He's truly a freak..."
On the other side,
Xu Xian, still within the array, watched the crumbling formation and the stalemated battle. When he saw the Sovereign retreating toward him, his heart leapt into his throat.
He knew very well that things were going wrong.
However, he couldn't think of a way to break the deadlock.
Although he had reached the Immortal status with the pulling of the sixth sword, and the Little Book Spirit hadn't fallen into a slumber after the sacrificial strike, it would still take a long time before he could deliver another strike.
He could one-shot Little Sequence Ning,
But that was only for one strike. His actual combat strength was more than enough to handle ordinary Grey Spirits and dark spirits, but against those in the Small Spirit Lord stage, his strength was still lacking.
Furthermore, there were many Great Lords at the God Immortal stage among the enemies before him. He was simply powerless to deal with them.
He could only watch helplessly.
Feeling weak and incompetent made him feel incredibly frustrated.
"Vile creature, you dared to kill the descendant of an Ancestral Spirit! I will destroy you!" Spirit Sequence Eighteen roared, attempting to break away from the fight and charge toward the sword array where Xu Xian was. A heaven-shaking palm descended, looking like a star smashing into the mortal world.
Baleful qi covered the sky and earth.
The Sovereign crossed the void to neutralize it and fought back with all his might to keep the three of them pinned. His voice, bolstered by divine sense, pierced through the noise and fell into Xu Xian's ears.
"Don't just stand there! I can't hold them back much longer!"
Hearing this, Xu Xian was utterly speechless. He wasn't blind; he could see the situation, but what could he do? If he stepped out of this sword array, he would be turned to ash in an instant.
"Throw that little turtle out!" the Sovereign shouted.
"And those bones you dug up—throw them all out!" the Sovereign added.
Xu Xian furrowed his brows, hesitating. He didn't know why the Sovereign wanted him to do this, and he couldn't be sure if this was another of his schemes.
While fighting, the Sovereign cursed in anger, "What time do you think it is? Stop thinking about those useless things! Dying at my hands would be better than dying at the hands of these monsters!"
The words were harsh, but the logic was sound. Xu Xian was truly swayed by them.
He gritted his teeth and steeled his heart.
"Fine!"
No longer hesitating, he connected his divine sense to the Sword Mound and summoned the Sword Gate.
Buzz! Buzz!
An ancient chant echoed as a majestic giant gate appeared out of thin air between heaven and earth, hovering above the formation.
The dark creatures surrounding the array saw this and retreated out of caution, staring at the high gate.
The stone gate was majestic,
Radiating a brilliant blue light.
Surprised light flashed in Xu Xian's eyes wave after wave.
First, the Old Tortoise was thrown out, along with that stone stele.
The moment the Old Tortoise rushed out, he winced in pain, grumbling and complaining, "Dammit, that hurts like hell! Couldn't you have given me a warn—"
But before he could finish, he realized something was wrong. The change in the laws was secondary; what he saw before him was the main point.
Techniques filled the sky, the firmament was churning, the wasteland was endless, and the Blood Spirit Army blotted out the sun.
It was a chaotic battlefield,
With no room for retreat.
Watching the baleful divine abilities smashing toward him, he jumped in fright. "Crap! Xu Xian, what are you doing again?"
Wait,
Why did he say "again"?
Before he could think, he received a command from the Sovereign.
"Xiao Ming, don't just stand there! Clear the area!"
The Nether Tortoise turned around and looked at the battlefield behind him. That terrifying yet familiar figure was so dear and familiar.
He said excitedly, "Boss?"
He was almost moved to tears.
The Sovereign barked,
"Get to work!"
The Old Tortoise forced back the tears he had managed to squeeze out, and his expression became exceptionally solemn.
"Fine! Watch me break this!"
On his palm-sized shell, radiant light burst forth along the patterns. In an instant, the chains locking him were snapped, and the stone stele shattered into pieces.
With the seal broken,
His body expanded at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Ten zhang,
A hundred zhang,
And finally, a thousand zhang.
His massive form was even larger than the Sky Gate above, dominating a section of the battlefield and leaving the attacking enemies in a state of shock.
"What kind of monster is this?"
"Kill it first..."
Xu Xian clutched his chest; when the stone stele shattered, he felt true heartache.
Just then, the Old Tortoise looked back and caught a glimpse of that pained expression.
Thinking he had scared Xu Xian, he was incredibly smug.
He thought, Brat, your day has finally come.
He gave him a deep look and left a harsh remark, "Xu Xian, just you wait. I'll settle the debt for making me eat shit with you slowly."
After saying that,
He stood upright and pounded his shell with his front legs, creating deafening booms. He extended his long neck and let out a roar.
"Awoo!"
He bellowed, "The Nether King is here! Come and fight if you dare!"
The resentment he had accumulated for a million years erupted completely at the moment his seal was broken. He began to rampage, slaughtering enemies in all directions.
The Sovereign urged, "Throw the bones..."
Xu Xian swallowed hard, the surprise in his eyes continuing. On the ruins of the space cleared by the Old Tortoise, he dumped out all the immortal bones he had piled up in the Sea of Divine Swords.
One set,
Ten sets,
A hundred sets...
The white bones piled up, dense and numerous!
