Chapter 264 · Volume 1

Dregs

Cheng Shuili stood before the main entrance of the Beastman Town Central Hospital, looking up at the three-story building constructed from gray-white stone.
A wooden sign stood at the hospital entrance, with “Emergency Room 24-hour reception” scrawled on it in a mix of clumsy human script and beastman language.
“Let’s go in and take a look.”
Cheng Shuili said to Su Rui, and the two pushed open the heavy wooden doors.
The interior of the hospital was much more modern than they had imagined.
Under the bright lights, several beastman doctors wearing white coats were busy at work.
A nurse with rabbit ears stood behind the triage desk and immediately perked up her ears when she saw them enter.
“Hello, how may I help you?”
The rabbit nurse asked in a crisp voice.
Cheng Shuili was busy observing the hospital’s interior, and since the rabbit nurse had looked at Su Rui when asking, Su Rui had to provide a rather abstract description.
“I have a friend... yes, a friend. She suffered a gunshot wound and can’t come here right now. Is there any way to provide remote treatment, or medicine we can take back that will heal her injury one hundred percent?”
The rabbit nurse flashed a perfunctory, professional smile. “Treating an injury from a distance, is it? You go pay the fees first, then go register, and wait for your number to be called.”
This sounded like it contained a lot of information, but in reality, it wasn’t detailed at all.
For instance... where was the payment desk? Where was registration? Which department should they register for? With so many questions left unanswered, what exactly was the rabbit nurse trying to say?
How had this godforsaken place managed to learn a whole heap of dregs without picking up a single shred of human concern?!
Su Rui frowned and took a step forward, about to ask again, when Cheng Shuili pulled her away. She was anxious: “Boss! We haven’t asked clearly yet! If we leave now, where are we going?”
What she said made sense, but Cheng Shuili had her own logic!
She narrowed her eyes and pointed her finger. Not far away stood a wolf-race beastman wearing a white coat.
Su Rui instantly quieted down. Her panic, born from being lost and without a goal, vanished completely.
What was this?
Was this a wolf-race beastman? This was family! This was their savior!
The two walked quickly toward the wolf-race beastman. Before they could say a word, he seemed to sense something. His expression shifted suddenly, and he dropped to his knees before Cheng Shuili with a thud.
Su Rui was speechless; this was also a dreg!
Cheng Shuili sighed. Just as she was about to lift the wolf up, she heard the rabbit nurse—who had been listless while answering questions—suddenly shout with great energy: “Someone is causing a medical disturbance!!!”
Medical disturbance?
What?
Cheng Shuili had just reached out her hand when the beastman security guards stationed in the lobby arrived. Two leopard-race beastmen, both ferocious in race and appearance, immediately surrounded them.
This was the first time Cheng Shuili had seen such intimidating leopard-race beastmen. Before meeting these two, she had always assumed all leopards were as cute as Bao Chi.
It wasn’t until the two security guards forcefully separated her from the wolf doctor that Cheng Shuili realized belatedly:
The person the rabbit nurse called a medical disturbance was her.
Cheng Shuili: “......”
She frowned and glanced back at the rabbit nurse, who was busy watching the spectacle. Even if you don’t want to work, you can’t just go around slandering people, can you?
“Wait! This is a misunderstanding!”
Cheng Shuili raised her hands to show she meant no harm, but the two leopard guards had already unsheathed their sharp claws, emitting low, threatening growls from their throats. It was clear they intended to expel both humans.
Su Rui quickly blocked Cheng Shuili, her voice laced with rare tension: “We only came to seek medical help! We have no intention of causing a disturbance!”
“Then why force our doctor to kneel?”
One of the leopard guards clearly didn’t believe her. His golden pupils contracted into thin slits as he questioned them in a low voice.
Cheng Shuili felt a sense of absurdity and turned to look at the wolf doctor.
The man was currently hanging his head, ears pressed flat against his scalp, tail tucked between his legs, looking utterly terrified.
It really was easy for others to misunderstand looking like that.
Cheng Shuili was speechless and asked with uncharacteristic urgency: “Can you really not stand up first?”
The wolf doctor’s lips trembled several times before he finally made a sound: “King...”
Cheng Shuili could tell he had tried his best, but she didn’t know why he couldn’t stand up smoothly.
Fortunately, he had a mouth: “It’s not a disturbance, it’s not a disturbance! This is our King, don’t misunderstand!”
While explaining, he struggled to stand. After failing a few times, he gave a bitter smile to the security guards nearby. “Seeing the King for the first time... I was too excited, my legs are a bit weak. Can you help me up?”
Security: “......”
Su Rui: “......”
Cheng Shuili: “......”
How strange.
Clearly, it was the wolf doctor who was losing face, so why did Cheng Shuili feel like she couldn’t hold her head up?
The farce finally came to an end. Cheng Shuili looked at the incompetent clansman before her and sighed, urging herself to focus on the task at hand.
Yes, business first!
Cheng Shuili’s gaze shifted to the wolf doctor with the drooping ears.
The wolf doctor was currently caught in self-doubt, feeling he was too disgraceful and a sinner to the entire wolf race, when he met Cheng Shuili’s gaze.
He felt even more ashamed.
The King’s gaze was so helpless yet tolerant, like someone looking at a cub that had knocked over its food bowl. The King trusted him so much, yet he...
The cold, professional image expected of a doctor and the pride expected of the wolf race all dissolved into shame at that moment.
He really had shamed the wolves too much, wuwu...
“Business first.”
Cheng Shuili’s voice pulled the wolf doctor back to reality.
The wolf doctor instantly realized this was the perfect opportunity to wash away the image he had left in the King’s heart!
He immediately perked up and asked: “What brings the King to the hospital this time?”
Cheng Shuili didn’t need to speak for such a question. Su Rui raised an eyebrow and stepped forward to repeat their purpose.
Hearing this, the wolf doctor frowned and repeated: “Gunshot wound?”
He finally displayed a bit of the professional quality a doctor should have.
Cheng Shuili nodded, and the wolf doctor seemed to gain some encouragement, his speech becoming more fluid: “Is the bullet still lodged in the body? If it is, the patient must come to the hospital in person. If the bullet is not in the body, it depends on whether it’s a graze or a penetrating wound. A graze is easy to handle, but a penetrating wound is a bit more troublesome.”
Suddenly, he became professional.
Very good!
Cheng Shuili replied: “It’s a penetrating wound.”
The wolf doctor paused, gathering his thoughts before saying: “It can definitely be healed, you don’t need to worry about that, but the time required for treatment is uncertain.”
That meant there was more to it.
Cheng Shuili: “Explain in detail.”
The wolf doctor glanced at Su Rui, then at the rabbit nurse who was peeking over from time to time, and whispered: “King... shall we go to my office to discuss this in detail?”
