Morpheus and his group did not stay long.
Before they parted, Lin Gui stopped them and asked two questions.
First, he asked about how to avoid the spectral demons.
This was because he noticed that Morpheus's group did not have a "guide."
“What do you rely on to disperse the demons inside the wall?” Lin Gui asked directly.
Morpheus did not hide it. He reached into his robes and pulled out a small leather pouch.
Untying the drawstring, he revealed several dark red, almost black thorn-like spikes that seemed to still be pulsing slightly.
They exuded a thick, ominous aura and... the pressure belonging to a powerful spectral lord.
“A portion of Lord Blood-Thorn's shed remains,”
Morpheus explained.
“Carrying it can ward off most of the weaker spectral demons.”
Lin Gui understood instantly.
The principle was similar to carrying the scale of an Epic dragon in the wilderness to deter lower-tier demons.
But obtaining a "part" from an Epic spectral demon was far more difficult than acquiring materials from a living Epic creature.
These were most likely left behind by Gusion.
There was indeed some special connection between that Demon King and "Blood-Thorn," the guardian of Avalon's entrance.
Morpheus was generous. He picked out two of the thorns in the best condition and with the strongest aura, handing them to Lin Gui.
“Take these. They might come in handy.”
Lin Gui did not refuse. He accepted them with a word of thanks.
Although he had the Eyes of the Netherworld and did not really need them,
this was indeed an extremely rare soul magic material, which would be of great benefit to his future studies of deeper Soul Magic.
The spells rewarded by the system were excellent, but they all remained at the novice level.
To break through, the number of letters he needed to deliver was still far out of reach.
Now that Theia was not by his side and Eve was also about to leave,
he was indeed facing a severe lack of offensive capabilities.
Suppressing the faint sigh rising in his heart, Lin Gui asked his second question.
“Do you know someone named 'Moro Troy'?”
“He is a resident of Avalon and asked me to deliver a letter to Blackwater City.”
Morpheus was taken aback. He frowned in thought for a moment, then shook his head.
“Doesn't ring a bell.”
He looked toward the Sage, Kilian.
Kilian stroked his beard, pondered for a few seconds, and said with absolute certainty:
“There is no such person in Avalon.”
“I remember the names of every single resident, including those who have passed away.”
“It is impossible for me to be mistaken.”
Lin Gui nodded, not pressing further.
He had only asked out of curiosity anyway; it wasn't as if he absolutely had to find the sender.
He had already experienced the memory of the foxkin—previously, a certain foxkin companion's expense reports, accurate down to a single copper coin, had left a deep impression on him.
It was time to say goodbye.
Morpheus looked at Lin Gui. After a brief hesitation, he spoke:
“Would you like to... come with us to the Voiceless Rift?”
“I think Lord Gusion would be very pleased to meet a... little mage who has given us such a surprise.”
Behind him, Ruger and Kilian looked slightly surprised, but neither voiced any objection.
Lin Gui smiled wryly and shook his head.
“Apologies, but I still have letters to deliver.”
His refusal was expected, and Morpheus had only mentioned it in passing.
However, Hugh, the usually silent Legendary assassin, suddenly took a step forward.
His sharp gaze scrutinized Lin Gui as he spoke slowly:
“With the abilities you just displayed...”
“I believe you can cross the Blackwater Corridor, reach the borderlands, and deliver Avalon's letters.”
“When the post office first opened, I heard that a High Rank mage wanted to help deliver letters. I dismissed it as a rumor.”
He paused, looking at Lin Gui.
“But now...”
“I misjudged you.”
“Actually, I also have a letter I want to send. The destination is quite far. I originally planned to ask the transport team in the future.”
“If you are willing to accept it, I will pay the reward.”
Lin Gui's interest was piqued.
“Where to?”
Hugh uttered:
“Dawn City.”
“The Assassin's Court.”
“Deliver it to the Grand Instructor of the Assassin's Court, Hugh.”
【Ding! Extra Commission updated!】
【Content: Deliver Hugh's letter to Hugh, the Grand Instructor of the Assassin's Court in Dawn City】
【Route: Planning will begin once the Host confirms the activation of the quest】
【Time Limit: None】
【Reward: One random special magic spell】
【Risk Warning: Grand Instructor Hugh has an explosive temper. Please be careful not to trigger him, or you will be warned with a naked public hanging on the city wall.】
Looking at the last line of the "Risk Warning," Lin Gui's lips couldn't help but twitch.
Naked public hanging on the city wall?? What on earth???
That sounds terrifying.
He looked at Hugh and asked,
“You and that Grand Instructor 'Hugh'...”
Hugh remained silent for a moment before speaking flatly:
“I am his good-for-nothing son.”
He said no more, simply handing Lin Gui a simple, ancient-looking black metal token that felt cool to the touch.
The token was about the size of a palm, with slight wear along its edges.
The front was engraved with a pattern of a dagger piercing through shadows, while the back bore the sharp character for "Hugh."
It felt heavy in the hand, faintly exuding a chilling aura of slaughter.
Beside them, Eve seemed to suddenly remember something.
Her purple eyes widened slightly as she looked at Hugh.
“You... you are that 'Shura'?”
“The Shura who assassinated the previous council president, slaughtered the Demon Hunter Unit, and incited a riot in the Assassin's Court...?”
Hugh merely curled his lips.
He neither admitted nor denied it.
It was as if the terrifying reputation that had caused waves in the outside world was nothing more than a passing breeze to him.
He untied another item from his waist and handed it to Lin Gui.
It was a dagger, extremely small and delicate.
The sheath was made of plain black leather, completely unadorned.
When drawn, the blade was dull and showed no magical fluctuations whatsoever. It looked utterly ordinary.
“This is your reward. The Gray Dagger.”
“It is forged from meteoric iron,”
Hugh explained.
“It was forged by a top master artisan who passed away long ago. It is exceptionally sharp.”
“It cannot be infused with any form of energy, but by its own merits alone...”
“it is enough to slice through unactivated Stellar-tier Armor.”
“In other words, even an ordinary citizen without any training could use it to cut through Stellar-tier Armor.”
He paused.
“It is said that there are only ten such daggers in the entire Akara Continent.”
“It is useless to top assassins, but for you...”
A faint, albeit slightly strange smile appeared on Hugh's usually cold face.
“At least, the next time you are 'kidnapped' by your two beautiful companions and they try to force themselves on you...”
“you won't even lack the means to cut the ropes they prepared.”
Lin Gui was instantly dumbfounded. “...How do you know about that???”
Beside him, Eve added in a flat, expressionless tone,
“Presumably, a certain demon who trespassed into someone else's home spread the word.”
Beside them, Morpheus let out an embarrassed cough, his gaze wandering:
“Ahem... well... it's really because what you guys did was a bit too absurd...”
Lin Gui: “...”
He figured this guy definitely hadn't told only Hugh.
In all likelihood...
the entire city of Avalon already knew about it.
Theia would probably have to hide at home, too ashamed to see anyone for the next six months.
He silently accepted Hugh's dagger and token.
This meant he had officially accepted the commission.
Although Dawn City was ridiculously far away, even further than the City of a Thousand Towers,
the Extra Commission had no time limit.
He could take his time delivering it.
Morpheus solemnly thanked Lin Gui one last time, then delayed no longer.
He turned and exchanged a look with Ruger, Kilian, and Hugh.
The four shouldered their packs and quickly walked away toward the deeper, deathly silent mist to the north.
Their figures soon vanished among the crumbling walls of the Blackwater City ruins.
Lin Gui withdrew his gaze and looked down at the letter in his hand from "Moro Troy."
Then he glanced at the newly added commission in the system pointing toward distant Dawn City.
He exhaled softly.
“We should get going as well,”
he said to Eve beside him.
The flying vessel vanished into thin air, and his oak staff floated before him.
Mounting the staff and taking Eve along, Lin Gui began flying toward the address on the letter bound for Blackwater City.
