Chapter 206 · Volume 1

How to Cross the Wailing Corridor

Lin Gui could see Gero's wariness.
If he were in Gero's shoes, he wouldn't reveal everything to a stranger either.
He did not push the matter.
Instead, he simply asked for Avalon's exact coordinates.
Gero did not deliberately hide this sensitive information.
He took the map of the Wall of Sighs that Lin Gui had bought from Blackbeard.
Using a piece of charcoal, he drew a clear circle over a specific spot in the Wailing Corridor.
The reason he did so without hesitation was simple.
After their conversation, even if he didn't say it, Lin Gui would have been able to pinpoint the general area anyway.
Besides, the Wailing Corridor itself wasn't particularly large.
Second, although Lin Gui's concealment magic had surprised Gero,
and had even caused Hannah to suffer a setback at Theia's hands because of it,
even so, Gero still did not believe—
—that the other party could cross a death trap that even he could not traverse.
If a High Rank mage could truly cross the Wailing Corridor alone...
...then the numerous Legendary Demon King guards who had fallen in the Wailing Corridor would probably be so furious that their souls would turn into vengeful specters.
Gero shook his head and laughed in his heart.
In truth, while Avalon's location was a mystery to outsiders,
it was no secret to the other eighty Demon Kings who could sense where the Demon King Pillars were activated.
The factional struggles among the Demon Race were far more brutal than those of humans.
Too many demons wanted to kill Gusion to seize his Demon King Pillar and ascend to the rank of Demon King.
Many of the demons sent to hunt Gusion down possessed strength no weaker than Gero's.
There had even been three Epic Demon Kings—two Low-tier Epics and one Mid-tier Epic.
Yet, in the end, they had all retreated upon laying eyes on the Wailing Corridor.
The only person Gero had ever known to have crossed it was Shadow Blade Lynn, more than ten years ago.
But she had done so by relying on extreme speed, gritting her teeth and pushing through while tanking the attacks of all the specters.
The speed of a High-tier Epic Assassin...
As for the demons who wanted to hunt Gusion down, Gero had not seen them for a very long time...
...until now.
Remembering the group that had captured Cass in the cathedral, Gero's expression grew solemn once more.
Had they realized Gusion had left the Wailing Corridor and decided to make their move?
As a Demon Hunter, Cass did indeed possess the ability to track Gusion down.
Saying no more, he carefully picked up the still-unconscious Hannah.
Turning around, he strode in the direction Rosa had gone.
Watching Gero's figure disappear into the end of the ruins,
Theia tugged on the hem of Lin Gui's robe and asked in confusion:
“Are we really just letting him leave like that?”
Lin Gui withdrew his gaze and replied calmly:
“Otherwise, what? He's a High-tier Legendary Knight.”
“Could we even stop him?”
“That's not what I meant!”
Theia stamped her foot, her silver hair swaying slightly with the movement.
“I mean, shouldn't we follow him?”
Her emerald eyes were filled with seriousness.
“Didn't he say that without Gusion, no one can enter Avalon?”
“The Wailing Corridor... that shorty Blackbeard mentioned it too.”
She counted on her fingers.
“Epic spectral demons are everywhere there, and rumors say there's even one at the peak of High-tier Epic.”
“Shadow Blade Lynn paid a heavy price just to cross it once back then.”
“So shouldn't we follow Gero to find Gusion together?”
The more she spoke, the more sense it made to her.
“How great would it be to find Gusion and have him lead us into Avalon!”
Lin Gui sighed helplessly as he looked at her enthusiastic face.
“Theia, this is just an interlude.”
He reached out and gently flicked her forehead.
“We originally had a plan.”
“Don't think about completely throwing it out the window the moment a variable appears.”
Theia and Eve both froze.
They looked at each other and blinked.
Then, they let out soft, realization-filled gasps in unison:
“Huh...?”
“A plan? What plan?”
Theia turned to Eve, her face full of confusion.
“Eve, did you ever hear Lin Gui mention some 'plan to reach Avalon'?”
Eve furrowed her delicate brows.
Even with her usual calm demeanor, she was a bit lost at this moment.
Tilting her head slightly, her pale gold short hair swayed gently with her movement,
wearing a slightly cute expression as she tried to recall.
Finally, in some corner of her memory, she found the "plan" Lin Gui had once mentioned.
It was just that...
Eve's expression became somewhat strange.
She had thought it was just a casual joke from Lin Gui at the time.
Because that plan was simply too reckless.
Like an ignorant, hot-headed youth attempting to challenge a fully armed Legendary Knight.
She stepped forward and scrutinized Lin Gui's face.
Then, she raised her hand, a faint glimmer of magic appearing at her fingertips,
and gently pressed them against his forehead.
Lin Gui was puzzled. “What are you doing?”
Eve blinked and said with a serious face:
“Checking to see if your head has been corrupted by the mist and you've suffered mental derangement.”
Lin Gui speechlessly slapped her hand away.
Theia leaned in, nodding solemnly.
“Yeah, yeah! Lin Gui, there's definitely something wrong with your head!”
She asked curiously, “By the way, what exactly is Lin Gui's plan?”
Eve fell silent for a moment, then recounted in an odd tone:
“If I remember correctly, it was something like...”
“Hitch a ride with a bounty hunter team to reach the nearest safe city-state, Blackwater City.”
“Then, using Blackwater City as a base, head toward Avalon...”
“And brute-force our way through.”
“Relying on the speed of the flying vessel.”
Theia: “...???”
Her mouth hung slightly open as she froze for a few seconds.
Then, she finally remembered—Lin Gui had indeed said those words.
But it had sounded too ridiculous at the time, so she hadn't taken it seriously at all.
Theia's expression instantly turned serious.
She grabbed Eve's arm and said earnestly:
“Eve, quick, heal his brain.”
“This guy... has absolutely lost his mind.”
“That big shot just said that only Gusion can cross the Wailing Corridor.”
Theia stood with her hands on her hips, her tone full of helpless "you're a hopeless case" resignation.
“Doesn't that basically tell you that the correct way is to find Gusion?”
“Yet here you are, still planning to follow that ridiculous plan.”
“To cross the Wailing Corridor, which even a High-tier Epic powerhouse like Shadow Blade Lynn was unwilling to cross?”
The more she spoke, the more unbelievable she found it.
“It's true you braved the Blackwater Forest alone, but can that place even compare to the Wall of Sighs?”
“Even Uncle Balin wasn't this terrified when he mentioned the Blackwater Forest!”
“I haven't gone mad.”
Lin Gui shook his head, his expression exceptionally serious.
“After careful consideration, this is the safest method.”
As his words fell,
Theia and Eve fell silent at the same time.
The two stared blankly at him, their gazes as if they were looking at a stranger.
A reckless fool who had suddenly stripped away all his usual caution and started completely losing his mind.
The doubt and "you're beyond saving" look in their eyes almost materialized.
Lin Gui could read it without even trying to guess.
He let out a sigh.
How should he put it... this was indeed the result of his careful weighing of options.
Furthermore, he had seventy percent confidence in this plan.
And if what Ryan said was true,
the deathly silence along the way was the biggest anomaly, and the bizarre phenomenon Lin Gui had encountered during his first crossing of the Wall of Sighs was not an illusion,
then Lin Gui's confidence in crossing the Wailing Corridor would increase by another ten percent.
With Avalon's precise coordinates,
if Gero hadn't lied to him,
then crossing the Wailing Corridor to reach Avalon this time...
...might just succeed on the very first try.
There would be absolutely no need to use Blackwater City as a base, repeatedly trying and repeatedly failing.
