Inside the wolf court, the scents of sandalwood incense and the stench of corpses were intertwined.
Seeing the demons feasting on human hearts, Moon-Swallowing was very satisfied.
He picked up a human heart from the golden plate before him and sent it into his mouth, chewing slowly as if savoring the world's most exquisite delicacy.
Moon-Swallowing let out a low laugh.
"Humans possess a Linglong Heart, while demons are born with muddled, unopened intellect."
"By eating these human hearts, we can understand humanity, grasp Buddhist principles, shed these filthy furs, and achieve true enlightenment."
Even as he spoke, the gates of the Moon-Swallowing Wolf Court were being eroded and assimilated by death qi.
Amidst the bone dust filling the air, Chen Zhou arrived with his hands behind his back, followed by the drunken, mad beggar Wu Gou.
"A beast is a beast. Even donning a cassock cannot mask the stench of a brute."
Moon-Swallowing Wolf Saint’s movements froze.
He slowly lifted his head, eyes reflecting a gaze of lofty pity.
"Outsider, so you’ve come," Moon-Swallowing laughed foolishly.
"That useless Xu Yunzi must have already kicked the bucket, hasn't he?"
"It’s just as well. With one fewer person to divide the providence of the Northern Region, my certainty of achieving Buddhahood has increased slightly."
Before Chen Zhou could speak, Wu Gou’s eyes lit up at the sight of the wine on the offering table, and he bolted forward.
He wove through the pack of wolf demons, his filthy hands—their original color long since obscured—moving so fast they left afterimages.
"Excuse me, pardon me... this wine is quite good, let me have a taste."
"Aiyah, this heart is too fishy; it’s no good with wine. A pig’s ear would be much better."
Wu Gou scrambled through the wolves, pilfering as he went.
He not only snatched the wine, but while the wolf demons were stunned, he also swept away all the offerings on their tables besides the hearts.
"Who are you?!"
Finally, a wolf demon reacted, roaring as it reached out to grab Wu Gou.
Wu Gou ducked, sliding away like an eel, and smashed a wine flask against the wolf demon’s forehead.
"Smash!"
"Why the shouting? I’m helping you resolve your karmic sins!"
The originally manic Moon-Swallowing saw his pupils constrict violently the moment he caught sight of Wu Gou, every hair on his body standing on end.
"It’s you..."
Moon-Swallowing stood up abruptly, his finger trembling as he pointed at Wu Gou.
"You’re that abandoned dirty thing?"
Wu Gou stopped drinking.
He looked up, saying coolly, "Dirty thing?"
Wu Gou laughed, a maniacal sound.
"Old dog, you wear the skin of the dead and eat the hearts of the living, all while worshipping that old bald ass who wants to turn all living beings into rotten meat."
"And you call me a dirty thing?"
"I think you’re the filthiest piece of trash in this world!"
"Insolence!!"
Moon-Swallowing Wolf Saint was struck where it hurt, flying into a total rage.
How much had he sacrificed to cultivate a human form and achieve Buddhahood?
He most hated being reminded that he was a demon, and he hated even more being called dirty.
"Kill him for me!"
"Flay him alive. I will use his skin to make a lantern."
Wu Gou was startled. 'A gentleman uses words, not fists. Why start fighting so suddenly?'
He wiped the wine stains from his mouth and scurried over to Chen Zhou's side with a grin.
"Don't listen to that old dog's yapping. I’m not a dirty thing; he’s just jealous that I’m more handsome than him."
"Great fiend, hurry up. That old dog’s chanting is giving me a headache. Be a dear and shut him up."
Chen Zhou didn't waste any breath; he was also tired of hearing this group of demons' grotesque chanting.
"Minions, get to work."
Chen Zhou waved his sleeve, and his Ghost Domain expanded.
"Crack! Snap!"
Countless pale white bones reached out from the void.
At Chen Zhou’s command, the skeletons charged at the wolf demons still gnawing on human hearts.
"Awooo—!!"
The wolf demons were forced to interrupt their cultivation. Their feral nature flared as they engaged in a bloody melee with the bone army.
In an instant, limbs flew and flesh splattered.
Seeing the fight break out, Wu Gou didn't get involved. He found a slightly cleaner corner, sat cross-legged, and pulled out the wine he had just snatched, taking a satisfied gulp.
"Fight, fight! Make it more lively."
"The show has just begun."
Occasionally, the flames of war reached him, or an unobservant wolf demon tried to sneak an attack.
Wu Gou wouldn't even stand up; the ground beneath him would simply collapse, and he would zip into the earth.
When the wolf demon lunged and missed, he would stick a hand out from under another floor tile, accurately snatch a flask of wine, and then retract it.
Chen Zhou followed his ghost servants, stepping forward as overwhelming death qi crushed down, harvesting the lives of large swaths of wolf demons.
However, as the slaughter continued, Chen Zhou noticed something was wrong.
Those wolf demons he had sliced in half, those assimilated into bone, or even those incinerated into ash by Hatred Fire...
Within three breaths of falling, strands of golden vow power would emerge from the cracks in the ground, merging into their remains.
Then, flesh would regrow, and bones would reassemble.
The wolf demons who had clearly been killed staggered back to their feet.
Chen Zhou's brow furrowed slightly.
Something wasn't right.
Previously in the Northern Region, only the mortals enveloped by the vow power of Ksitigarbha of Great Vows would turn into the living dead and possess immortality.
The wolf demons and the people of the Heavenly Sword Sect were treated as consumables and should die normally.
But now, these wolf demons actually possessed immortal bodies too?
Chen Zhou silently increased the burning of his Evil God Points, using [Faith Conferment] to bolster himself. Temporarily breaking through to the seventh-stage, the Hatred Fire in his hand surged, transforming into a whip of black flame that lashed out fiercely at Moon-Swallowing on the high platform.
"Snap!"
Half of Moon-Swallowing’s body was instantly shattered, revealing the tangled death qi within.
But Moon-Swallowing merely smiled. A human body was indeed fragile compared to a demon's, but it didn't matter. As long as he achieved Buddhahood, everything would be perfected.
The shattered body healed instantly within the golden light. Moon-Swallowing pressed his palms together and continued chanting, as if he hadn't even seen Chen Zhou.
"Ignoring me?"
Anger flared within Chen Zhou. He unleashed several more strikes, each one shredding Moon-Swallowing to pieces, yet the demon was restored perfectly every time.
How shameless.
Chen Zhou stopped and scanned the battlefield, finding that the madman Wu Gou had disappeared again.
"Damn it, dropping the ball at the crucial moment," Chen Zhou cursed under his breath. "Did this lunatic see things going south and sell me out?"
"Hey, hey, hey, I heard that! How can a great fiend like you talk smack behind someone's back?"
A disheveled head suddenly popped out of the shadow behind Chen Zhou.
Wu Gou was holding a roasted chicken he had swiped from the offering table, his face greasy from eating.
"You were just cursing me, I heard it," Wu Gou grumbled dissatisfiedly.
Chen Zhou grabbed him by the collar and hauled him up. "Spit it out, what’s going on?"
"How did these wolf demons become undying living dead just like those villagers?"
Wu Gou pretended to think. "You figure something out! Aren't you a great fiend?"
"You can't kill these living dead who keep resurrecting."
Chen Zhou frowned. "I’m asking you."
Wu Gou blinked innocently. "Well, don't you have any stronger methods?"
"I do."
