The frog demon let out a shrill scream.
He looked down in terror as blood sacs suddenly bulged on his bloated belly.
The blood sacs ruptured, and twisted human faces forced their way out of his flesh.
"No... what is this!"
"Help! Aaaah!"
"It itches so much, it hurts!"
His lackeys were given the same reward. Human-face sores broke through their bodies, pus flowing onto the ground in a foul-smelling mess. Festering had begun.
"Well?"
Plague Rat stood in place, arms crossed, looking down at the demons rolling on the ground, tearing at their own flesh.
"Was the reward from Lord Rat enough?"
"Is it enough?"
"Do you want any more?"
With every question Plague Rat asked, the festering on the demons intensified.
This terrifying sight instantly plunged the entire street into panic. Every demon watching the spectacle or trading froze where they stood. A chill shot up from their tailbones to the tops of their heads. They looked at the arrogant, laughing humanoid monster and didn't even dare to breathe loudly.
Just then, a sound of rustling shells came from the end of the street.
"Out of the way! Move!"
"Chai Guard business! Everyone else, back off!"
A squad of fully armed scorpion demons charged forward aggressively. Their leader was a large scorpion nearly at the fifth-stage, radiating a piercing killing intent. It had just received a report of someone causing a disturbance and had immediately brought reinforcements.
The large scorpion immediately saw Chen Zhou and his party, who were surrounded by an eerie aura in the middle of the street.
"Presumptuous!"
The Chai Guard Captain raised its left pincer and pointed it at Chen Zhou. "The Great Demon Assembly is imminent. How dare you demons openly break the rules of Lord Chaiwang inside Chaiwang City! Men, seize these fools!"
Several Chai Guards stepped forward to act.
In the shadows of the street corner, the Slime Demon that had just escaped poked half of its body out again. Seeing the Chai Guards arrive, it felt a surge of joy. 'Hahaha, the Chai Guards are here! These out-of-town demons are dead! To run wild in Chaiwang City and beat up a connection to the human pens—they’re looking for death!' It waited gleefully to watch the show.
Facing the aggressive Chai Guards, Plague Rat slowly turned around.
"Oh?"
His crimson eyes looked at the Chai Guard Captain without a shred of emotion. "Seize me?"
He simply turned his body. The Chai Guards who were about to move finally saw clearly who was lying on the ground in front of Plague Rat.
Was that the Old Toad of the east street? The frog who usually acted like a tyrant because of his cousin’s connections? At this moment, he no longer had a demonic form. Along with the other small lackeys, he had become a mound of flesh made of pus, blood, rotten meat, and countless human faces.
"Hiss—"
The Chai Guards gasped, their footsteps coming to a dead stop. The fifth-stage Chai Guard Captain's pupils shrank to pinpoints. It recognized that aura. It was plague! A plague higher than the fifth-stage! Where the hell did this tough character come from?!
The joy on the Slime Demon's face at the street corner froze. What was it seeing? The toad... just like that... was dead? Instantly killed? Even the Chai Guards stopped? The Slime Demon felt a chill rise through its slime. It no longer dared to watch; its body shrank back as it prepared to flee this place of trouble at all costs.
Cold sweat broke out on the Chai Guard Captain. Its previous arrogance vanished without a trace. It had served in Chaiwang City for a hundred years; what kind of demons hadn't it seen? The more silent and ruthless they were, the more terrifying their background. It immediately put on a smile that looked worse than crying and slowly lowered its pincers.
"This... this lord..." Its voice was incredibly dry, and it no longer dared to mention "arresting" anyone. "This small one was blind. I did not know which demon king had arrived. I have offended you... please, please calm your anger..."
As it spoke, it frantically winked at its subordinates to make them retreat. "Lord, you see, this is Lord Chaiwang’s city after all..." The Chai Guard Captain steeled itself and brought up its backing. "The Great Demon Assembly starts tomorrow. Every person of importance in the southern region of Gloomlight Province is in the city. Please... for the sake of the Thousand-Eyed Toad Saint and Lord Chaiwang, do not let the dispute escalate..."
"Face?"
When Plague Rat heard those words, it was as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world. He was about to mock them, but another voice, devoid of any emotion, spoke first.
"Plague Rat."
It was Chen Zhou. From beginning to end, he had just stood quietly, watching the farce. This was the first time he had spoken. Only two words.
Plague Rat stopped smiling and immediately bowed. "This rat is here, my lord."
The Chai Guard Captain and all the surviving demons on the street looked at the skeletal figure. This bag of bones was the actual master?
"Clear the area," Chen Zhou said indifferently.
"As you command!"
Plague Rat licked his lips excitedly; he had been waiting for those words! He jerked his head up, looking at the terrified Chai Guards and the demons on the street who were holding their breath.
"Hahahaha!"
Plague Rat laughed wildly, the plague fiendish qi inside him erupting without restraint. "My lord said to clear the area! You trash think you're worthy of talking about rules? You think you're worthy of face?"
"Oh no! Run—"
The Chai Guard Captain was scared out of its wits. It tried to shout for them to run, but it was too late.
Time seemed to hit the mute button at that moment. The fifth-stage Chai Guard Captain's expression of terror was frozen forever. Its black carapace couldn't even last a single breath under the erosion of the plague before it turned into pus.
The guards behind it, along with every demon on the street who couldn't escape—whether they were slime, spiders, or snake demons—were washed over by the corrosive fiendish qi. Their bodies, their souls, and their entire existence festered instantly.
Splat... splat... splat...
A series of faint sounds echoed. Within just three breaths, the thousands of demons on the street had all turned into pools of corpse water. The foul black water gathered into a small stream, flowing through the street before being absorbed back into Plague Rat’s body.
When the wind blew, the entire street was silent. Only Chen Zhou’s group remained, along with the thirty-seven humans who were still kneeling on the ground with numb expressions.
As the corpse water entered his body, Plague Rat felt his fiendish qi become a bit more refined. He walked over to the group of humans and distributed all the pills Chen Zhou had given him. There were exactly thirty-seven, not one more or one less.
"Lord Rat wants you to eat these. Don't dawdle."
Having finished this, he snorted, held his head high, and retreated behind Chen Zhou with his arms crossed.
