Chapter 78 · Volume 1

Battle! (2)

Without exception, this taunt successfully drew the attention of the human knight.
His silver armor had long been dyed crimson with blood, which even the torrential rain could not wash away. At this moment, he looked like a bloodthirsty demon.
And now, this demon slowly turned his head. Once he saw that the one taunting him was the minotaur who had caused him to trip, he ignored the other beastkin and half-beastkin. Gripping his flail, he strode aggressively toward Iron Bull.
As he closed the distance, his steps grew faster and faster. Finally, he swung the flail in his hand, bringing it down with a whistling howl, intending to finish off the minotaur in a single blow.
Facing this ferocious strike, Iron Bull's gaze was as resolute as steel. Unafraid, he raised his tower shield high.
“Boom!!!”
Rainwater and sparks sprayed outward instantly. At the same time, the tower shield dented with a groaning, muffled thud.
Iron Bull couldn't help but groan. He felt the bones in his arm shatter, but he still held on, buying time for the others to counterattack.
“Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!”
Blades, swords, spears, and lances struck the human knight's armor in rapid succession, erupting in countless tiny sparks.
Unfortunately, these fighters were all ordinary folk, none of them class-holders. With their strength, they could not pierce the human knight's armor—which had been blessed by a cleric—to deal a fatal blow.
With a violent shudder, the human knight shook off the weapons. He then swung his flail at Iron Bull once more, seemingly intent on beating this loathsome minotaur to death first.
“Boom!”
Like a hammer striking an anvil, the flail slammed brutally against the tower shield again. The already overburdened shield instantly fractured with countless cracks.
At the same time, a sickening crack echoed from Iron Bull's arm.
Yet, the stubborn minotaur actually took this chance to cast aside his shield. Seizing the opening, he suddenly swung the battleaxe in his other hand. Twisting his hips and channeling his entire body's strength, he gritted his teeth and chopped at the joint between the human knight's helmet and breastplate!
There was a gap there! It was one of the very few weak points on the knight's armor!
And this was exactly Iron Bull's plan!
“Ahhhhhhh!!!”
“Squelch!!!”
The axe blade successfully wedged into the gap, and blood sprayed outward!
Seeing this, Iron Bull's face lit up with joy. Blood, which had seeped from the corner of his mouth at some point, dripped onto the ground as he muttered:
“I... I did it!”
But immediately after, he heard a ragged, heavy gasp, and his expression instantly stiffened.
The dying human knight actually swung his flail once more, striking out with savage force!
Iron Bull's pupils dilated. He wanted to raise his shield to defend, but his shield arm had long since lost all sensation; he couldn't muster an ounce of strength.
He wanted to force the axe deeper to finish the man first, only to find that the blade was wedged tight, unable to budge even a millimeter.
The flail grew larger in his peripheral vision. Iron Bull could already picture the horrific scene of his skull being shattered, blood and brains splattering everywhere.
Perhaps because death was near, his thoughts suddenly accelerated several-fold.
But it was merely an acceleration of thought.
It still couldn't stop any of this.
It was like... his life flashing before his eyes...
Countless thoughts flashed through his mind, but in the end, he could only sigh silently.
‘I'm sorry... Anna... I broke my promise...’
However, in the next second, a violent tearing sound, like space itself being ripped apart, suddenly echoed through the air!
“Boom!!!”
A colossal figure suddenly fell from the sky, instantly trampling the seemingly invincible human knight underfoot.
Under the immense impact, the silver armor was instantly flattened into a crumpled tin can.
Flesh and blood sprayed from the seams of the armor like thick ketchup, splattering everywhere!
This sudden turn of events made everyone around widen their eyes in shock.
Before them stood a three-meter-tall, pitch-black behemoth.
Steel pipes protruding from its shoulders spewed thick plumes of steam into the rainy curtain. Beneath the helmet, two glowing crimson eyes stared down at Iron Bull.
“Brave warriors, you have completed your mission outstandingly.”
A voice like grinding steel echoed from beneath the helmet:
“Leave the rest to us!”
As his voice fell, one pitch-black suit of power armor after another leaped down from the city walls.
“Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom...”
“Boys, it's time!!”
A kobold wearing power armor with his faceplate open crashed down from the sky. Utilizing his immense kinetic energy, he punched a rampaging frost wolf, burying half of its body into the ground.
He then drew the massive broadsword—as tall as a man and as wide as a door—from his back, pointed it forward, and roared:
“By order of Your Grace, crush them!!”
With a sharp click, he snapped his faceplate shut and took the lead in charging, diving into the chaotic battlefield with an agility that completely defied his massive bulk.
With a single sweep of his sword, he sliced a blind frost wolf and its rider clean in half.
Shredded organs and a deluge of blood splattered across the ground from the heavy blow, instantly coating the blade in a thick layer of gore.
The fine armor, which seemed utterly impenetrable and unbreakable to ordinary people, was no different from wet paper before this sheer, unadulterated power!
Meanwhile, the earth began to shake as one suit of power armor after another charged forward, following Fido's lead. They swung their broadswords, unleashing an endless slaughter.
The human knights quickly noticed these sudden, giant iron monstrosities. With perfect coordination, they abandoned their current targets and swarmed the power armors.
Nearly five thousand wolf riders rapidly employed a multi-to-one strategy, isolating and surrounding the power armors.
Yet, when they launched their normally devastating attacks, they were shocked to find that they could do nothing more than leave a few shallow scratches on the smooth paint of the power armor.
And in return, they were met with a heavy, sweeping slash of a broadsword!
“Kill!!!”
“Ha!!!”
“Squelch! Squelch!”
At this moment, the three hundred plus members of the Imperial Guard equipped with power armor were like demons returning from hell. With repetitive yet highly efficient slashing motions, they harvested fresh souls one after another.
In just a few short minutes, the wolf riders who had charged in so confidently began to show signs of collapse under the bloody casualties.
Watching this unfold, Iron Bull, sitting dejectedly on the ground, was utterly dazed.
What the hell...
Did the gods of war descend?
But right then, a deafening roar suddenly erupted from beyond the front lines!
“Roar!!!”
Some looked up at the sound and saw a pair of massive dragon wings flashing in and out of view amidst the crackling lightning.
It was a wyvern!
And on the wyvern's back, a golden-armored figure could faintly be seen standing...
