Chapter 241 · Volume 1

Academy Life (14)

Starlight, who hadn't held much hope, felt his spirits lift instantly upon hearing Eventador’s question. It seemed that Eventador not only knew about these characters but also understood quite a bit about them.
He immediately told Eventador about Xia Duo’s assessment from the previous day and the fact that he was unaffected by the text.
After listening to Starlight’s description, Eventador thoughtfully smoothed his slightly messy hair and began to explain the origins of the script in detail.
Although Eventador himself could not read the script, he told Starlight that it originated from an ancient civilization on the East Continent.
Originally, the library had several books about them in its collection, but because of the bloodline seal, no one could understand what was written inside.
At one point, many students discovered the strange script, and a wave of enthusiasm for deciphering it swept through the academy.
However, the mysterious power passed down from the primordial era was not so easily broken. As a result, many people suffered a backlash from the power of the bloodline seal, and some even nearly lost their minds.
This brought the danger of the script to the attention of Eventador and the others. Consequently, they ordered all books containing these characters to be removed from the library.
Since no one could read them anyway, it was better to nip the problem in the bud rather than let them remain in the library as a hidden hazard.
“The East Continent...? Where is that? Why have I never heard of it?”
Starlight silently repeated the new term a few times, a sense of confusion rising in his heart.
“It’s normal that you haven't heard of it. In fact, aside from a few people in the Egret City-State, very few on this continent know that another human kingdom exists across the ocean to the east.”
Seeing Starlight’s puzzled expression, Eventador continued to share the information he knew.
Anyone with a basic knowledge of geography knew that the Leon Continent was shaped roughly like a rectangle or an oval, surrounded by vast oceans on all four sides.
In the far east, there was a mysterious continent where human civilization existed.
Every so often, people would cross the ocean from that side to reach Egret Harbor on the easternmost edge of the continent to engage in trade with the locals.
Strangely, however, they almost never ventured deep into the Leon Continent, nor did they have much contact with the locals. As a result, the people of the Leon Continent remained largely ignorant of the eastern kingdom.
“So there’s actually a place like that in the world... Since they can come here, why haven't we sent anyone over there? Even with a lack of communication, the information shouldn't be this scarce, should it?”
Regarding this question, Eventador admitted he hadn't looked into it deeply, but throughout history, it wasn't as if no one had tried to establish a route between the two continents. All such attempts had ultimately ended in failure.
“I’ve heard that the depths of the East Ocean are teeming with dangerous sea beasts, along with thousands of kilometers of fog and thunderstorms that even Saint Rank experts find difficult to survive! Honestly, I’m also curious how they manage to cross those obstacles to reach Egret Harbor.”
Eventador shrugged helplessly, then pulled a handwritten manuscript filled with square characters from his storage space and handed it to Starlight.
After taking the book, Starlight flipped through it briefly and studied the contents. He found that it was indeed something like a dictionary, which further solidified his belief that he was not affected by the script.
“Since you aren't affected by the bloodline seal and are interested in these characters, why don't you take this book with you, Little Star? Who knows, maybe you’ll encounter someone from the East Continent on your travels,” Eventador suggested.
However, Starlight raised a question. “But Uncle Evan, since such a dictionary exists, doesn't that mean someone on the Leon Continent must be able to read these characters?”
Facing Starlight’s doubt, Eventador scratched his head awkwardly and admitted frankly:
“I’m ashamed to say it, but I actually compiled this book myself. You see, the soul power of a Saint Rank can grant partial immunity to the power of a bloodline seal. With enough time, one can still translate a few words, but the time required is completely disproportionate to the gain, so I eventually gave up. After all, that taste of soul backlash is quite unpleasant...”
Starlight finally understood who those curious people Eventador had mentioned earlier really were...
Indeed, if even an Archmage could not fully decipher them, it would be even more impossible for anyone else.
However, now that he had this simple dictionary, Starlight felt he might be able to learn something about the East Continent.
Thinking of this, Starlight quickly thanked Eventador for his help and explained that he might be leaving the academy soon.
“Don't thank me. If you really manage to learn anything, just remember to share it with me. After all, I’m quite curious about them myself,” Eventador said with a smile.
“Are you planning to head to the Crimson City-State next? You’ll need to be careful. It’s well known that they aren't very friendly to outsiders, especially the two young girls with you! Also, remember to stop by my place before you leave. My teacher might have something he needs your help with.”
Eventador was not surprised by Starlight’s plan to go to the Crimson City-State. After all, given Starlight’s circumstances, it wasn't realistic to expect him to stay in one place for long.
Moreover, it seemed there wasn't much left for him to learn at the academy.
“Grandmaster is looking for me? ...No problem! I’ll keep that in mind.”
Although Starlight didn't know what kind of help his mysterious Grandmaster needed, he agreed readily.
After obtaining some valuable information from Eventador, Starlight left the principal's office feeling satisfied. He knew the principal had his own work to do and couldn't always rely on others for help every step of the way.
Still, he felt that getting news about the East Continent’s script was an unexpected windfall. He believed that as long as he was willing to invest the time to learn, he might be able to uncover some valuable information from these characters.
“By the way, Noah, can you translate these characters using Uncle Evan’s book? You heard him just now—Saint Rank soul power can bypass some of the negative effects of the bloodline seal... Uh, then again, you don't have a body right now, so the concept of a bloodline shouldn't even exist for you, right?”
Starlight asked curiously as he walked, cradling Noah in his arms.
Hearing Starlight’s idea, Noah couldn't help but huff, a sound that was quite similar to the way Xia Duo rolled her eyes at Po Kong.
“Hmph, do you plan on using me as a portable translator? You should put in the effort to learn yourself! But your question is quite novel—would someone without a body be affected by a bloodline seal?”
Though Noah grumbled, he still had Starlight tuck the handwritten manuscript from Eventador between his pages, intending to study it thoroughly.
After leaving the main castle building, Starlight looked at the warm morning light and found himself unsure of what to do next. He felt like he hadn't had such leisure time in a long while.
“Should I go to the library now? But it seems a bit early...” Starlight muttered to himself.
As he was strolling leisurely down the school path, a commotion broke out in an alleyway by the side of the road, sounding like a heated argument.
