Chapter 73 · Volume 1

Repelled

Beep! Beep! Beep!
Just then, Wang Hai's phone rang. He pulled it out, switched it to speakerphone, nodded to Lu Senyu, and answered, “Hello, this is Wang Hai.”
“Team Leader Wang, this is Chief Xu's secretary. We received a distress call from Bai Yuwen. He is currently being chased by a madman and can't shake him off at all,” an urgent female voice reported from the other end.
After Xu Qiulan's death, Wang Hai had temporarily taken over as the Chief of the Yangcheng Security Bureau.
Inside the room, everyone's expression turned grave as they listened to the voice on the phone.
Bai Yuwen was currently their only supernatural combat asset. If something happened to him, they would have no chance of competing for the Lord of Evil's supernatural items in the future.
Meanwhile, the screen beside them flickered, displaying a haughty young man with the number 69 tattooed on his face.
“Liu Qi of the Liu family. Along with those red-eyed individuals, this is all the Liu family's doing,” Song Lianhu said, pointing at Liu Qi on the screen as he introduced him to the two Yangcheng officials.
The screen switched to show a video of Liu Qi instantly slaughtering dozens of soldiers and taking down nine shadow monsters.
Below the video, a text analysis from the think tank appeared.
“Liu Qi: Arrogant and frenzied. Preliminary assessment suggests his ability is afterimage displacement. He is fast enough to dodge supersonic attacks at close range. Unless wide-area destruction weapons are deployed, conventional weapons cannot hit him. It is recommended to use biochemical or gas attacks against Liu Qi in a sparsely populated area!”
Lu Senyu stared at Liu Qi and the text on the screen, his face grim. “This Liu family is getting far too arrogant. They were among the instigators behind the Ningcheng incident, and now they've come to Yangcheng. Do they really think they can do whatever they want just because they've become supernatural?”
He looked at the white-haired elder from the military. “General Zhong, deploy the chemical warfare squad. I will have Bai Yuwen lure him over there.”
Zhong Xinnan nodded, picked up a red landline phone in front of him, and made a call.
Lu Senyu then turned to Wang Hai. “Forward Bai Yuwen's call to my phone. I want to speak with him personally!”
In the South District, quite a few pedestrians were walking along a street.
A young man was just about to eat a steamed bun he was holding.
Whoosh!
A figure flashed through the sky, and the resulting gust of wind swept dust all over his bun.
“What was that?! My bun!” Looking at his bun, the young man couldn't help but yell.
Whoosh!
Just then, an afterimage materialized in front of him, and a hand reached out to touch his bun.
In the next instant, the afterimage solidified into a young man, who forcefully shoved the dust-covered bun right into the pedestrian's mouth.
Whoosh!
Having done this, the young man vanished. An afterimage appeared hundreds of meters away and solidified as he continued his pursuit of Bai Yuwen in the sky.
Both of their speeds were close to three hundred meters per second. Just a bit faster, and they would break the sound barrier.
Up in the sky, the scenery around Bai Yuwen whipped backward so quickly that everything blurred into streaks.
Within these passing streaks, a figure diving forward with hands sliding up and down on either side kept appearing.
The two of them maintained a distance of a hundred meters, but the pursuer was steadily closing the gap.
“Minister Lu, are things set up on your end yet? This guy is too fast. I can only stall him for three minutes at most,” Bai Yuwen said. A sphere of white light enveloped the phone in his left hand to protect it from being damaged by the extreme speed.
His stamina was draining rapidly. If the authorities didn't step in soon, he was going to make a run for it.
“Everything is set. Lead him to the abandoned Factory No. 9 in the northern suburbs. I assume you know where that is?” Lu Senyu's voice came through the line.
“I know it!” Bai Yuwen replied. He hung up and immediately veered toward the North District.
Along the way, they flashed past numerous crowds, but at speeds nearing three hundred meters per second, no one could react in time.
A minute later, they reached the northern suburbs. The high-rise buildings thinned out, replaced by barren land and small factories.
Spotting a massive, rusting abandoned factory ahead, Bai Yuwen immediately flew inside.
Upon reaching the center of the factory, he halted and turned to face the afterimage appearing behind him.
The afterimage solidified into Liu Qi. He glared at the stationary Bai Yuwen and sneered, “Kid, why'd you stop flying? Out of steam?”
Sizzle!
Bai Yuwen raised his right hand, white energy condensing within it. His voice was icy. “Out of steam? I just wanted to find an isolated place to kill you.”
He was stalling for time. The factory was over two thousand meters long and fifteen hundred meters wide, with plenty of abandoned structures blocking their lines of sight.
Within the outer structures of the factory, large volumes of green gas began to billow out. Further out, on all four sides of the factory compound—
—massive industrial fans were set up. Beneath the fans, soldiers wearing gas masks pressed ignition buttons.
Whirrr!
The fans roared to life, blowing the toxic green gas toward the center of the factory. In just a dozen seconds, it would completely blanket the entire building.
At the center of the factory, seeing that Bai Yuwen was still gathering energy, Liu Qi took a step forward, and an afterimage surged out from his body.
“Get lost!” Bai Yuwen slammed the partially formed white energy in his hand violently into the ground.
Bang!
The ground exploded, sending a shower of shattered stone and dust flying. The afterimage that was about to solidify instantly vanished.
A dozen meters away, just as Liu Qi was preparing to flank him, his expression shifted, and he whipped his head around.
A massive wall of dense green gas was rapidly rolling toward him. The gas towered dozens of meters high, closing in not just from behind, but from all four directions.
Sizzle! Sizzle! Sizzle!
As the gas came into contact with steel and concrete, a corroding hiss rang out, and the surfaces blackened rapidly.
If he were engulfed by this toxic gas for even a single second, even he would have to pay a steep price.
When he turned back to look through the settling dust, Bai Yuwen was already gone.
He couldn't help but look annoyed. “Figures. When backed into a corner, you government bastards are even dirtier than I am.”
First, they mowed down civilians with machine guns, and now they were using poison gas. An authority that had completely cast aside its moral boundaries was indeed troublesome to deal with.
But it was only troublesome. He quickly scooped up several fist-sized chunks of stone from the ground.
Whoosh!
He hurled a stone high into the air, dozens of meters up. Before the stone could even begin to fall—
—an afterimage materialized right on top of it. The image solidified, and Liu Qi appeared dozens of meters in the air, lightly stepping on the airborne stone.
Just as the stone was about to drop, he threw another chunk of rock, which flew over a hundred meters.
Whoosh!
An afterimage flashed to this new stone, and Liu Qi materialized. He only had two stones left in his hand, but that was more than enough.
He threw another, which soared hundreds of meters, and his figure materialized there before throwing the last stone and vanishing again.
A second later, beside one of the industrial fans, an afterimage appeared and solidified into Liu Qi.
Several chemical warfare soldiers were standing nearby, completely unaware of Liu Qi's sudden arrival.
Staring at them, Liu Qi thought of how he had lost Bai Yuwen, and a surge of rage flared within him.
His figure blurred.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The chests of three soldiers exploded, and their bodies were thrown forward over a dozen meters before crashing to the ground.
Only after killing these three minor players did his anger subside slightly. He glared at the remaining soldiers in the distance. “You useless trash! Because of you, I failed the mission I promised the Elder!”
For the next half minute, his figure flickered among the soldiers.
After sending every single chemical warfare soldier in the vicinity to heaven, he vanished without a trace.
Up in the sky, several crows circled overhead.
