Chapter 70 · Volume 1

Battle in the Morning Rush

On the street adjacent to the jewelry store—the street with the most office buildings in the East District—several black vehicles were parked along the curb.
Xu Qiulan held a walkie-talkie in her hand. “Did you catch them?”
“Director Xu, the targets are elite. It's not easy to take them alive,” a voice crackled through the walkie-talkie.
Anger flashed across Xu Qiulan's face. “Use tranquilizer guns! If you can't even bring back a single survivor out of six gunmen, believe it or not, I'll file a report tonight and have you sent to guard a reservoir!”
“Yes, ma'am! I will definitely bring back a survivor!” Left with no choice, the person on the other end could only agree immediately.
“Director Xu, Bai Yuwen has already secured the trench coat and the ring,” a woman quickly reported as she stepped forward.
Hearing this, Xu Qiulan's face lit up with joy. “That kid didn't let my training go to waste.”
She looked at the stream of cars and the crowds of pedestrians on the street. It was already peak commuting time.
The morning rush was in full swing.
“Thankfully, we resolved it before the rush hour peak. Otherwise, the casualties would have multiplied,” she thought. Just as she was feeling relieved—
Inside the top floor of an office building, behind a glass window, a young man with a buzz cut, wearing a tight black short-sleeved shirt and with the number 69 tattooed on his face, quietly watched Xu Qiulan below.
Tap, tap, tap!
Footsteps echoed from behind as a Night Slave approached.
Looking at the scene outside the window, the Night Slave said, “Ah Qi, I've tested Bai Yuwen's strength. He can control shadows, and his personal combat skills are slightly superior to a Night Slave's. I'll leave the rest to you.”
Liu Qi replied with a respectful expression, “Elder, I understand. These local ruffians are nothing compared to our Liu family. I will definitely secure all three supernatural items!”
The Night Slave nodded. In the next instant, his expression returned to a vacant daze.
Liu Qi turned his gaze back to the window. In the middle of the street below, a man wearing a mask and a trench coat appeared, escorted by a group of soldiers.
On the street below, Bai Yuwen followed the soldiers toward Xu Qiulan.
From time to time, curious passersby glanced at him, and some even pulled out their phones to take photos, only to be stopped by agents who suddenly appeared.
A military officer walking beside him said, “Mr. Bai, there is still one sword left to retrieve. We'll have to trouble you again.”
“No problem. Once I discuss it with Director Xu, we can set off immediately,” Bai Yuwen replied confidently.
With the backing of the state, it was hard to imagine losing.
On the rooftop of the adjacent fifty-story building, Liu Qi looked down at Bai Yuwen. His lips curled into a sinister grin. “Target spotted. Let the hunt begin!”
He pressed his hand against the glass.
Crack!
Spiderweb cracks spread rapidly before the glass shattered completely. Liu Qi leapt from the fifty-story rooftop.
In midair, his body plummeted downward under the pull of gravity.
Hum!
Suddenly, an afterimage appeared on the building's wall, frozen in a running posture.
In the next instant, the afterimage solidified. The free-falling Liu Qi was suddenly standing on the wall, his legs moving in a rapid sprint straight down the vertical surface.
At the same moment, a hundred meters away, Xu Qiulan waited for him to arrive.
The female agent from earlier stepped up and whispered, “Director Xu, we've captured one alive. The rest of the gunmen were shot dead while resisting.”
“Take them back to the bureau for interrogation. I want to know who ordered this within three hours,” Xu Qiulan commanded.
She then continued to issue orders, “Since the issues have been completely resolved, have the soldiers and our personnel withdraw. Just leave the inspectors—”
Screeech! Vroom!
As she was giving instructions, the screech of tires and the roar of an engine suddenly echoed.
“A vehicle has run the checkpoint! Stop it!” a furious shout came from the end of the street.
Xu Qiulan instinctively turned her head and saw a modified heavy truck barreling in.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The truck ran amok on the road, easily tossing aside the cars blocking its path like toys as it headed straight for Xu Qiulan.
“Ah!”
Screams erupted from the surrounding crowd.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The soldiers opened fire on the truck's cab, but the bullets only left dents on its surface without penetrating.
Seeing the truck still dozens of meters away, Xu Qiulan's expression changed. “Run!”
She spun around and ran to the side, her subordinates scattering in all directions.
Crash!
The truck slammed violently into several Security Bureau vehicles, sending them flipping forward.
Just as the truck prepared to plow forward again, a hail of bullets from all directions shredded its tires.
Pfft!
The tires blew out, and the truck ground to a halt.
A few meters away, Xu Qiulan watched the scene with a grim expression.
Vroom!
Suddenly, a sedan parked by the roadside started up. Its headlights flared to life as it lunged toward Xu Qiulan.
Seeing the vehicle hurtling toward her, Xu Qiulan's pupils contracted. “Too late!”
In the distance, the ground beneath Bai Yuwen's feet exploded as he lunged forward to save her.
Swish!
Suddenly, an afterimage of a throwing punch appeared to his right. It was so fast that he had barely begun to turn his head—
—when the afterimage solidified into a man. A cruel grin plastered across his face, he sneered, “Kid, where are you looking?”
Swish!
Liu Qi drove a punch straight into Bai Yuwen's flank. The immense force sent Bai Yuwen flying.
Crash!
Bai Yuwen slammed heavily into the side of a sedan, denting the metal deep inward.
Crash!
From a distance, another loud crash echoed.
Xu Qiulan was pinned against a wall by the sedan. Her lower body was crushed, and blood gushed from her mouth, killing her instantly.
“Ah! That really hurts!” Bai Yuwen clutched his side as he stood up from the dented car.
If the trench coat hadn't absorbed most of the impact, he felt his kidney would have definitely been ruptured.
“Enemy spotted! Fire! Fire!”
Only then did the surrounding soldiers snap out of their shock. They raised their rifles and aimed at Liu Qi. But just as they were about to pull their triggers—
—Liu Qi's figure blurred, and he materialized right in their midst. Without even looking at the soldiers, he whipped his left hand out in a rapid sweep.
Dozens of afterimages of his fist appeared simultaneously in front of each soldier's face. In the next split second, the afterimages solidified.
Bang!
A fist slammed into a soldier's face. Under the immense force, the soldier's facial bones shattered.
The fist plunged deep into the head, dragging flesh and skin with it. Unable to withstand the terrifying inward crushing force, the skull exploded.
In less than a tenth of a second, the heads and helmets of dozens of surrounding soldiers were completely blown apart.
Thud! Thud!
Liu Qi pulled back his hand and flicked his wrist to shake off the blood and brains. The headless soldiers collapsed to the ground in unison.
Witnessing this, Bai Yuwen, who had been about to charge back into the fray, felt his pupils contract. “What incredible speed!”
Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!
Just then, the deafening roar of multiple engines rose from both ends of the street. A fleet of black sedans charged recklessly onto the road.
As the soldiers and agents tried to open fire, several men in black wearing sunglasses suddenly lunged out from the surrounding crowd of pedestrians.
Slash! Slash!
Armed with cold weapons, they slaughtered the remaining soldiers in a matter of seconds.
From the moment the heavy truck appeared to the total annihilation of the soldiers, barely fifteen seconds had passed.
Soon, both ends of the street were blocked by over a hundred black cars. Night Slaves poured out of the vehicles, charging toward the nearby soldiers, inspectors, and agents.
Each Night Slave possessed absurd speed. Sprinting down the street, they easily leaped three to four meters into the air, their blades reaping lives with every downward slash.
