Chapter 56 · Volume 1

Earth Mother (2)

Zhao Jin looked at the Earth Mother’s transformation with a satisfied expression. “You three better not look at her, or I won't save you if you die.”
His words reached the ears of Liu Jiyun and the other two ordinary people below. Hearing this, they quickly turned their backs to the Earth Mother.
The entity had not yet fully been born; otherwise, the three of them would have mutated already.
“Wu...”
A strange sound emanated from the Earth Mother’s mouth.
“Wu...”
The sound grew louder and louder. In the next moment, the Earth Mother’s half-closed eyes snapped open, and countless hands reached out to grasp the air before her.
She looked at her surroundings and opened her mouth. “Wah!!!”
A shrill cry like that of a baby rang out. The surrounding space distorted, and gray light radiated from the Earth Mother’s body, flooding the area.
In less than a second, the light illuminated all of Ningcheng.
Inside a nearby building, a young man stepped out of his room to investigate the tremors coming from the church.
The gray light swept through his body, and his expression went blank.
A maddened voice echoed in his consciousness: “My child, return to mother’s embrace. No longer shall you suffer the miseries of this world!”
The voice repeated incessantly, causing the young man’s eyes to turn white as he began to mutate.
Something was bulging beneath his skin, as if something were about to emerge.
Puchi!
In the next second, countless black bone spikes pierced through his skin. His body swelled, and his face became hideous.
A monster over two meters tall, covered in black bone spikes, stood in his place.
“Roar!” The bone-spiked monster let out a low growl and began walking toward the Earth Mother’s location.
Behind the young man, a large number of mutated monsters emerged. Their eyes were vacant as they instinctively walked toward the Earth Mother.
Inside the hospital, the gray light passed through the walls and through Zhang Yi’s body.
He leaned against his hospital bed, looking at the world outside that had turned gray. His expression was one of despair. “I still didn't make it in time...”
The worst-case scenario had occurred. The nuclear missiles hadn't arrived, but the Earth Mother had appeared first.
“Child, return to mother’s embrace. You are too tired. If you are tired, take a rest.” At that moment, a gentle voice came from the right side of the hospital bed.
That voice sounded just like his deceased mother.
Hearing the voice, Zhang Yi turned his head to look.
He saw a rural woman in her forties, dressed in simple green clothes, sitting there and smiling at him.
The smile was so gentle that Zhang Yi’s eyes filled with tears. He knew perfectly well that the mother before him was an illusion created by the Earth Mother.
But he still couldn't help but reach out, wanting to touch the woman. “Mom, I’m so tired. Sometimes I think, how good would it have been if I never came to Ningcheng? Maybe I would still be that Detective Zhang...”
The woman looked at him with a pained expression. She stood up and gently cradled Zhang Yi’s head. “Good child, Mom is here. You don’t have to be so tired anymore. Come with Mom.”
Feeling the warmth radiating from the woman, Zhang Yi’s tears flowed uncontrollably.
Just a few days ago, he was a famous detective in the Nanming Kingdom, having solved countless major cases. Anyone with eyes could see his future was limitless.
But after becoming half-paralyzed, all of that had slipped away. The intense contrast was something he couldn't accept.
Even the mission assigned to him by the higher-ups to counter Zhao Jin had failed. He no longer had any will to live.
Eyes began to appear on Zhang Yi’s hands, their color a sickly yellow. Black liquid seeped from his paralyzed lower body.
He felt the changes in his body, but he didn't care. He held his mother, a smile on his face as his eyes turned yellow and vacant.
Zhang Yi suddenly stood up, a mass of black liquid supporting his body as he headed outside.
Through the window, one could see a vast number of bizarre monsters heading toward the Church of the Earth Mother on the outskirts of the city.
Looking down from the sky over Ningcheng, one could see a dense mass of monsters moving toward the outskirts.
The two million people of Ningcheng were all converted into monsters the moment the Earth Mother was born.
At the entrance of the Church of the Earth Mother, a large number of monsters appeared.
Liu Wen looked at the converging monsters, then turned to look at his three descendants.
The three of them had not turned into monsters because an invisible gravitational pull surrounded them, distorting the light rays and redirecting them elsewhere.
“Truly terrifying. It didn't feel this sinister when I read about the Earth Mother in the chronicles.” Liu Qi craned his neck, looking curiously at the monsters passing by them.
Some monsters emitted poisonous gas, but as the gas approached them, it was distorted by the Gravity and sent in another direction.
Liu Wen looked at the Earth Mother in the sky, not daring to move an inch. He felt that if Zhao Jin’s Gravity hadn't enveloped them, they would have been the first ones torn apart by the Earth Mother.
The first to reach the area beneath the Earth Mother was a monster whose head had split into two halves.
The monster knelt. In the next moment, its body directly melted, and a mass of flesh and blood flew into the Earth Mother’s face.
More and more monsters melted at this moment, their remains flying from the distance into the Earth Mother’s body.
The Earth Mother’s size was increasing, and the Destiny Force above her head was growing.
Zhao Jin floated beside her, the smile on his face widening. “Eat, eat your fill. You’re still a child.”
His own Destiny Force was also skyrocketing as the Earth Mother consumed, reaching a count of one hundred thousand.
The momentum continued to rise. He reclined in the air, occasionally letting out strange laughs. “Hehehe, hehehehe...”
Two minutes later, everyone in the city except for the Liu family below had disappeared. Even the corpses of Peng Fei and Liu Ziping had been absorbed.
Zhao Jin looked at his Destiny Force, his smile nearly reaching his ears.
Destiny Force: 1.87 million units!
This was equivalent to 1.87 million days of lifespan. Even if he did nothing, he could live for over five thousand years.
Zhao Jin’s smile quickly faded. He turned his head to look at the Earth Mother, whose size had reached several hundred meters. “Humanity’s strongest means of attack has arrived. As an evil god, I’m looking forward to seeing you shock those people.”
His Heavenly Domain had already sensed two missiles rapidly approaching. It wouldn't be long before they landed on Ningcheng.
The Earth Mother’s massive flesh face turned toward Zhao Jin. Her eyes stared fixedly at him as she spoke in an emotionless female voice, “What kind of existence are you? Why can I not influence you?”
The Earth Mother possessed self-awareness; the memories of all the humans she absorbed became hers.
In just a second, she realized that this ant-like humanoid creature before her was wrong—very wrong.
Zhao Jin clasped his hands behind his head and lay in the air, looking at her with a grin. “You don’t need to know who I am. You just need to follow your instincts. You’d best not touch those four creatures below, either. After all, I don’t want to harvest you too early.”
He spoke without any restraint, not showing even a hint of wariness.
Hearing Zhao Jin’s words, the Earth Mother silently turned away. She had indeed intended to strike at Zhao Jin.
But a divine premonition gave her a sense of immense threat. To strike was to die!
In the distance, through the night, two white lights with long trails streaked across the sky, rushing toward Ningcheng.
As they neared Ningcheng, the speed of the white lights surged as they entered their terminal acceleration phase.
