Bang!
The figure lunged onto Zhang Yi and the others' van, grabbing the shattered window with one hand and the door with the other.
“What?!” Seeing the figure's crimson eyes, Zhang Yi's expression shifted rapidly as he fired the shotgun once more.
Crack!
At that exact moment, however, the Night Slave exerted its strength. Veins bulged all over its body as it ripped the car door right off its hinges.
Bang!
Zhang Yi fired. The Night Slave's head and neck exploded, and its grip on the window slipped.
The headless body fell onto the road, rolling along with the vehicle's momentum.
This brief delay and the missing car door gave the remaining Night Slaves in the other van their opportunity.
Clutching hammers and axes, they leaped from their van onto Zhang Yi's vehicle, completely fearless of death.
One Night Slave lunged inside, swinging its hammer in a blur toward Zhang Yi's head.
“Watch out!” Peng Fei raised a short dagger, blocking the hammer.
Clang!
Sparks flew. Peng Fei felt a surge of immense force and stared grimly at the Night Slave.
Thud!
Another Night Slave rushed in from behind, swinging an axe toward Duan Chebin's neck.
Duan Chebin immediately drew a dagger from his waist to block the incoming axe.
Clang!
With a sharp metallic ring, the sheer force pushed his dagger right against his own neck. His face flushed red as he strained to hold back the blow.
Screeech!
He slammed on the gas, the tires squealing as the van left long skid marks on the road.
The other van pulled up alongside them and stopped, and two more Night Slaves surged out from within.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Holding a dagger in one hand, Peng Fei parried the incoming axes in the cramped cabin.
Slash!
After parrying another blow, he swung his short dagger, slicing deep into the enemy's neck as blood sprayed.
Yet the Night Slave's expression didn't even flicker as it swung its axe again.
Clang!
‘Its strength is fading.’ Parrying the axe with a casual flick of his blade, Peng Fei immediately noticed the difference.
He had almost thought they were truly undying, given how recklessly they fought.
Thud!
Lifting his right leg, he kicked the Night Slave hard, sending it flying out of the van.
In the next second, two more Night Slaves rushed forward with melee weapons.
Beside him, Zhang Yi had already put down his shotgun and drawn a dagger. The enemies were too close; firing now risked friendly fire.
As more and more Night Slaves swarmed them, Zhang Yi's expression turned grim.
Peng Fei had drawn both of his short daggers, swinging them so fast in the cabin they became a blur.
Yet, the two armed Night Slaves managed to match his speed.
Zhang Yi wanted to help, but Peng Fei roared, “Don't! Climb out the window! These things aren't human—I can barely hold them off!”
Slash!
Suddenly, an axe bit into Peng Fei's shoulder, spraying dark blood.
“Ah, you bastard!” Gritting his teeth against the agonizing pain, Peng Fei clamped his shoulder muscles down to trap the axe, and swung his left dagger directly into the assailant's head.
Slash!
A thin red line appeared across the Night Slave's head. Its skull slid sideways, and Peng Fei kicked its body out of the van.
Seeing Peng Fei's injuries, and then glancing at the other Night Slave locked in a struggle with Duan Chebin,
Smash!
Zhang Yi immediately snatched up a hammer dropped by one of the Night Slaves and smashed the side window.
He quickly squeezed through the opening, shouting, “Take care of yourselves!”
Ignoring the glass shards slicing into his flesh, he scrambled out of the window and sprinted toward a nearby residential area.
Whoosh!
Click!
The driver's door of the Night Slaves' van swung open, and a Night Slave stepped out.
Holding a handgun, it aimed at the fleeing Zhang Yi and opened fire.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunfire echoed down the street.
Dozens of meters away, a blue sedan screeched to a halt, startled by the gunshots.
The young man in the driver's seat watched Zhang Yi zigzagging to dodge the bullets. His face paled. “Damn it, these gang members are getting more and more out of control.”
He quickly turned his car around to flee, pulling out his phone to call the police, only to find he had absolutely no signal.
“Hah... hah...” Zhang Yi panted heavily. Sparks flew around him as bullets struck the asphalt and nearby walls.
He had never expected to be so close to death. All his firearms were left in the van; otherwise, he wouldn't be in such a helpless position.
Suddenly, a sharp pain flared in his back. His legs went completely numb, and he collapsed heavily onto the ground.
Zhang Yi dragged himself forward with his hands, crawling toward the curb just a few meters away.
‘No, I can't die here. The world needs to know about these non-human entities!’ Zhang Yi gritted his teeth and forced himself forward.
Ten meters behind him, the Night Slave raised its pistol and aimed.
Bang!
Thud!
The bullet struck Zhang Yi's back, draining all color from his face as agonizing pain washed over him.
Seeing that the shot hadn't finished him off, the Night Slave prepared to fire again.
Click!
Out of ammo. It tossed the empty gun aside, drew a dagger from its coat, and sprinted toward Zhang Yi.
Thud, thud, thud!
Hearing the rapid footsteps approaching, Zhang Yi turned his head to look at the rushing Night Slave. A bitter smile appeared on his face. “I lost... I shouldn't have treated you like ordinary criminals based on my past experience. I should have treated you like terrorists...”
The Night Slave said nothing. Reaching Zhang Yi, it raised its dagger and lunged for his head. Zhang Yi closed his eyes, quietly awaiting his death.
Thud!
Just as the blade was about to pierce him, a short dagger flew through the air, embedding itself deep into the Night Slave's temple.
The creature stiffened, then collapsed, twitching, onto the ground.
“Zhang Yi!” a roar echoed from the road as Peng Fei sprinted over.
Zhang Yi opened his eyes to see Peng Fei, his body covered in wounds and his cheek slashed open.
Reaching him, Peng Fei took one look at the gunshot wounds on his back and quickly hoisted him onto his shoulders.
“Where is... Duan...” Zhang Yi murmured weakly.
He had lost too much blood, and his consciousness was starting to fade.
At his words, Peng Fei turned back toward the van. Zhang Yi forced himself to look.
Duan Chebin lay slumped over the steering wheel, a massive gash cut into his neck by an axe, blood soaking the wheel.
Beside him, a Night Slave hung limply over his seat, a dagger driven straight up through its chin into its skull.
At this sight, Zhang Yi's eyes rolled back, and he lost consciousness.
Peng Fei panicked, practically losing his mind. “Don't you dare fall asleep, Zhang Yi! You promised to help me get revenge! What the hell is this?!”
He carried Zhang Yi on his back and rushed toward the van.
Honk! Honk!
Just then, a horn blared behind them as a military Hummer with a battered front end pulled up.
The Hummer stopped right in front of Peng Fei. A soldier leaped out and urged, “Captain Peng, hurry! Get him to the hospital!”
Peng Fei nodded, carefully loaded Zhang Yi into the back, and climbed in beside him.
The driver slammed on the gas, speeding toward the hospital.
A kilometer away, a white sedan was parked by the side of the road.
Inside, a sinister smile played on Liu Wen's face. ‘Rescued, are they? But with injuries like that, surviving is going to be a miracle.’
His vision was linked with the Night Slaves, allowing him to watch and direct the entire ambush.
Although he had lost all nine Night Slaves, he could easily create more with just a small expenditure of energy.
“Time to go back.” He glanced at his wristwatch. It was 11:58 PM.
He started the engine and drove toward the outskirts of the city.
With this, the investigation team sent from the Capital...
Within less than twenty-four hours of their arrival, lay completely annihilated in Ningcheng, with four dead and one on the brink of death.
