Duan Chebin frowned slightly upon hearing this. “Minister Lu, we aren't ordinary people. We know this world is perfectly normal. There are no non-human entities here.”
The others shared the same sentiment. Due to their respective departments or backgrounds, they had long known what the world was truly like.
“Does today's matter have something to do with this?” Zhang Yi's face showed a thoughtful expression.
Lu Senyu looked at Zhang Yi, his expression turning grave. “Distribute the documents to them.”
The conference room door opened, and the female secretary from earlier entered, handing out a stack of documents to the five of them.
Zhang Yi picked up his folder. The first thing that caught his eye was a high-definition photograph.
In the photo was a corpse riddled with bullet holes.
The corpse's hands were pitch-black, its fingers elongated into sharp claws. Its eyelids had been pulled open to reveal completely black eyes, and its slightly parted mouth showed sharp fangs.
“This is...!” Looking at the photo, a look of shock flashed deep in Zhang Yi's eyes.
He continued to flip through the pages, looking at one photograph after another. Several of them showed victims whose internal organs had been completely hollowed out.
When he saw dozens of blood-soaked inspectors lying in an alley, his expression shifted from shock to deep gravity.
The final photograph showed a man around thirty years old.
His eyes were pitch-black, and he was being pinned down firmly by four inspectors. He glared savagely in one direction, where a young man stood.
“Damn, is the content of these photos real? These things actually exist?!” Feng Shaojun couldn't help but exclaim.
Fang Jian set down the documents, a puzzled look on his face. “And this actually happened just last night. Minister Lu, you should have video footage, right? I'm very interested in the final scene from the photo.”
Lu Senyu glanced at his secretary, who immediately walked over to the screen behind him and inserted a USB drive.
The video began to play. It started inside a pitch-black alley, captured by a body camera worn by one of the inspectors.
Half an hour later, the video feed switched to the outside of the alley, showing Peng Fei being escorted out.
He then pointed excitedly in a certain direction. The camera operator followed his gaze, capturing a young man wearing a suit and a bowler hat standing there.
Yet, the people in the video seemed as though they couldn't see the young man at all. The camera lingered on him for only a few seconds before panning away.
“Strange. This is far too strange. What were the Ningcheng inspectors doing? Why did no one approach that young man in the suit to ask questions, or at least bring him back to the bureau?” Zhang Yi asked, looking at Lu Senyu.
This was the very question on everyone's mind after reviewing the materials.
Lu Senyu said in a heavy tone, “According to the feedback from the Ningcheng inspectors afterward, none of them at the scene saw this young man at the time.
“It is as if this young man possesses some kind of special power. If this camera hadn't captured him by chance, the Ningcheng authorities probably wouldn't even know that such a 'person' had been watching them the entire time.”
“What on earth is happening to this world? Everything was perfectly fine, so how did these things suddenly pop up?” Tong Lin lamented.
Duan Chebin stared at the photo of Xiang Ping's corpse. “This thing didn't die even after taking so many bullets. If the military could harness this, the impact it would have on the battlefield would be terrifying beyond imagination.”
“Minister Lu, I assume our mission this time is this man?” Zhang Yi spoke up.
He lightly tapped his fingers on the table. Dealing with someone associated with unknown powers was extremely risky; one wrong move, and they could easily end up like those dead inspectors.
“Yes. Your mission this time is to find him,” Lu Senyu said.
“How should we handle him once we find him? Capture him, or eliminate him on sight?” Fang Jian asked.
“Eliminate a target like that? I believe the higher-ups' intention is to learn the truth behind the appearance of these non-human entities from him,” Feng Shaojun said, casting a glance at Fang Jian.
Just as Duan Chebin was about to speak, Lu Senyu raised his hand to cut him off. “Alright, all the necessary documents and videos are here. A charter flight has already been arranged for you. You can continue your discussion on the plane. After all, this monster is still active in Ningcheng, and many people have already died.”
With that, he stood up, and the others in the room followed suit.
Lu Senyu looked at the group and said solemnly, “As of this moment, the investigation team for the Ningcheng supernatural incident is officially established. Your objective: find the man in the suit from the video and investigate the anomalies occurring in Ningcheng. Operation codename: Heaven-Prying!”
He then turned his gaze to Zhang Yi. “Zhang Yi, from this moment on, I appoint you as the leader of this investigation team. Once you arrive, you will have full command over everything. I hope you will not disappoint me, or the higher-ups.”
Zhang Yi immediately saluted, declaring solemnly, “Understood! I will not fail you or the higher-ups, Minister!”
“Get ready and depart immediately!” Lu Senyu ordered.
The faster this matter was resolved, the better it would be for them. Otherwise, if too much time passed and other factions found out, the situation would become far more complicated.
That very night, they boarded the charter flight and headed for Ningcheng.
It wasn't until the following morning.
At the Ningcheng Airport, the area had been temporarily cleared. Large numbers of soldiers clad in black uniforms stood in various corners of the airport, rifles in hand.
The charter flight from the Capital taxied to a halt on the runway, and the cabin door swung open.
Zhang Yi walked out wearing white casual clothes. Behind him, Tong Lin and the others followed.
Feng Shaojun, wearing sunglasses, looked around as if he were on vacation. “So this is Ningcheng? I've never been here before.”
“Feng Shaojun, we are on a mission. Show some seriousness at a time like this,” Duan Chebin said, frowning at his carefree attitude.
“I know, I know. I'm just curious, okay?” Feng Shaojun replied without turning back, still glancing in every direction.
On the tarmac, a group of seven or eight people stood waiting for Zhang Yi's arrival.
Tong Lin looked down at the crowd and whispered to Zhang Yi, “Detective Zhang, the local representatives from Ningcheng are here. The ones leading them should be the local mayor, the garrison general, and the Chief of the Inspector Bureau.”
Zhang Yi nodded slightly and quickly walked down to the tarmac.
Standing before him was a middle-aged man in a black suit with stubble on his chin.
When he saw Zhang Yi, a strained smile appeared on his face as he quickly walked forward. “Group Leader Zhang, I've been eagerly awaiting your arrival.”
