Chapter 122 · Volume 1

Recruiting Supernatural Beings

A kilometer away from the collapsed cliff.
Bai Yuwen, Buck, and Jiang Nan stood there.
Behind them stood five new faces: two Asian youths and three Caucasians.
They were all people from Goro Island who had recently awakened supernatural powers.
Not long after they became supernatural, they were noticed by the crows that filled the island. Soon after, Bai Yuwen and Buck paid them a visit to invite them to join Tang Yongyun's ranks.
“Is that our boss? Even from this far away, the pressure he exerts is immense,” an ordinary-looking, black-haired youth among the five said, staring in shock at the dark figure hovering in midair a kilometer away.
Beside him, a white woman spoke with a solemn expression, “As expected of the first supernatural being. I'm afraid our boss's strength is already at the very top of the world.”
The other three were equally astonished. Tang Yongyun had been preparing for his evolution lately, so this was the first time they had actually seen their boss since joining.
Standing in front of the five, Jiang Nan listened to their conversation with a faint smile on her face.
When these people first became supernatural, they had all been incredibly arrogant. When they were first invited to join, money wasn't the only tool used.
Buck and Bai Yuwen had also beaten them down to make them realize that gaining supernatural powers didn't make them invincible.
Bringing these newcomers here today was precisely to show them how terrifying their boss was, helping them adjust their attitudes.
Suddenly, the dark figure hovering in the distance appeared right in front of them in an instant, the sudden gust of wind whipping their clothes and hair.
Boom!
Only after the dark figure appeared did the sound of a sonic boom catch up from the distance.
“Boss!” everyone greeted as Tang Yongyun arrived.
Tang Yongyun's outer armor began to liquefy into a black substance and melt back into his body, revealing his original appearance.
He nodded to the group, then looked at Jiang Nan. “How is the recruitment and capture of supernatural beings going?”
“Boss, we've already captured the monsters you spotted. They're currently locked up in the laboratory,” Jiang Nan quickly replied.
Tang Yongyun nodded and began delegating tasks. “Continue the operations. I will notify you when there are new targets. Bai Yuwen, get ready. Take two people and search for supernatural humans outside Goro Island. There's no need to capture the monsters there. We must seize the initiative and expand our strength in the shortest time possible.”
“Yes, sir!” everyone replied, full of drive.
At this rate, Goro Island would eventually become a global superpower.
The next day.
Nanming Kingdom.
Xichang Airport.
Liu Zhian walked ahead, dressed in a grey casual suit.
Following behind him was a fierce-looking man, about 1.8 meters tall, wearing work overalls. He had a long, thin face and no eyebrows.
“Cao Liang, the best decision you will ever make is joining my Liu family. Right now, the very city beneath our feet belongs to us,” Liu Zhian said with a trace of pride.
Behind him, the man named Cao Liang looked around. “Is this the benefit of being the first to master the supernatural? I didn't expect you to actually force the government to hand over Xichang City.”
He had also suddenly awakened his ability a week ago. Relying on his power, he had robbed a few wealthy people in his small town, and his life was just starting to look up.
Then Liu Zhian showed up, beat him to the ground, and invited him to join the Liu family.
Liu Zhian stopped in his tracks, turned his head to look at him, and smiled. “Everything relies on strength. Otherwise, why do you think the previous councilman suddenly vanished? That was the consequence of a bunch of ordinary people who couldn't accept reality trying to challenge us.”
Hearing this, Cao Liang's eyes flickered. “The rumors online claimed the change in councilmen was due to some coup. Now it seems reality is even crazier than a coup.”
“Times have changed. We are the first to reap the rewards. If you late-blooming supernatural humans want to go further and stay ahead of your peers, your only option is to join us,” Liu Zhian said casually.
The new era opened by Destiny had indeed allowed the earliest supernatural humans to reap the greatest benefits.
Currently, of the supernatural talents appearing across Nanming Kingdom, a small portion had been recruited by the Liu family.
Another portion was integrated by the government using power and status, while some chose to remain independent and join no one.
The two walked out of the airport. Over a dozen luxury cars were already parked there, with security guards in suits standing beside them.
“Let's go,” Liu Zhian said.
Cao Liang nodded and got into the car.
Meanwhile, in the Capital, eight hundred kilometers away from Xichang City.
Outside the Imperial Palace, the number of soldiers had tripled compared to before.
What's more, many supernatural humans who had joined the government were transferred by the Parliament to guard the imperial city.
Near the palace gates, a middle-aged man wearing a black overcoat over a suit looked at the dense crowd of soldiers and sighed. “What damn privilege. Deploying thousands of soldiers just for a meeting.”
Around him, six people stood or sat sparsely, their relaxed demeanor completely clashing with the stern, straight-backed soldiers surrounding them.
They were the first seven supernatural humans to join the government. Having passed their psychological evaluations to prove they harbored no dangerous thoughts toward the higher-ups, they were stationed here.
“Hey, we can be considered privileged now too, right? I never would've dreamed I'd be earning three million a month, getting a free apartment, and having easy jobs arranged for my family,” a woman in glasses and a suit sitting on a chair behind them chuckled.
Just by awakening an ability to scan her surroundings, she received such lavish treatment. It was truly absurd.
Just a week ago, she was still running around looking for a job that paid a few thousand dollars.
“Halt! This is the Imperial Palace. Unauthorized personnel are forbidden from entering!” While the group of supernatural humans was chatting, a loud shout echoed from the distance.
The leading middle-aged man looked toward the entrance of the road. A beautiful woman in a white tracksuit had appeared.
In front of her, two soldiers blocked her path with solemn expressions.
Death looked at the soldiers. After a night, it had completely adapted to He Wenxi's identity.
Seeing the soldiers blocking it, Death said in a flat tone, “Are you... obstructing my pursuit of happiness?”
Her words left the two soldiers momentarily stunned. What on earth was this woman talking about, bringing up “happiness” out of nowhere?
“Please leave, or we will be forced to take mandatory measures!” one of the soldiers warned, furrowing his brows.
He had no intention of showing leniency to a pretty face. This was the Imperial Palace. If any incident occurred, they could literally face the firing squad.
As the soldier spoke, two more soldiers gathered around. If this woman didn't leave, they were prepared to arrest her by force.
Back at the palace gate, the seven supernatural humans watched the show with great interest.
“These soldiers really don't know how to treat a lady. Yelling at such a beauty the moment she shows up,” a youth said with a grin.
“Wen Yu, is there anything wrong with that woman?” the middle-aged man in the overcoat, Li Xueming, turned to ask the bespectacled woman sitting in the chair.
He had accepted benefits from the government, so he had to take his job seriously. He couldn't let some crazy person with powers harm the higher-ups.
Wen Yu shook her head. “No reaction. She's not a supernatural human.”
Thud!
The moment the words left her mouth, the soldiers standing outside collapsed in unison, their pupils losing focus and their life force completely gone.
The faces of Li Xueming and the other six fell. They hadn't even figured out what was happening.
Yet, they saw the woman taking step after step toward them.
“Did she do this? Wen Yu, didn't you say she wasn't a supernatural human!” a middle-aged woman shouted.
Behind Li Xueming, a youth quickly pulled out a pistol, cursing, “Damn it, this money is really hard to earn. I've only been on the job for a few days and I've already run into trouble.”
Various energy fluctuations rippled across the others, who prepared to strike at any moment.
The youth aimed his gun at Death, saying coldly, “Since awakening, I haven't killed another supernatural being yet. Since you've delivered yourself to my doorstep, don't mind if I do!”
Bang!
The youth pulled the trigger, and the bullet fired from the pistol expanded in midair.
His ability was precisely to temporarily enlarge objects.
Opposite him, Death didn't stop. For these supernatural existences, it couldn't instantly kill them from a distance like it did with ordinary humans unless it made physical contact.
But that didn't mean it was out of options. Death reached its hand forward and said in a flat tone, “At the cost of three thousand soldiers' deaths, manifest the Sword of Decay.”
Hum!
Black light flickered in front of it, and a phantom-like, one-meter-long double-edged sword appeared.
Death's Cost: The quality and quantity of a target's death can be temporarily converted into a weapon against enemies!
Death gripped the hilt with its right hand and casually slashed forward, slicing the bullet—which had already grown to the size of a cannonball—in half.
The halved bullet flew off to both sides, old, decayed marks appearing along the cut.
Before they even hit the ground, they rusted away and vanished.
What kind of ability is this?! The youth who fired the gun was shocked to see her manifest a sword out of thin air.
Just as he wanted to fire again—
Slash!
A bloody gash appeared from the youth's left shoulder down to the right side of his abdomen. In the next instant, the clothes and wound around the gash began to rapidly decay, as if they had experienced countless years in a split second.
Thud!
The youth's upper body collapsed to the ground, his flesh rapidly decaying into bare bones.
This single move froze Li Xueming and the other supernatural humans in their tracks just as they were about to charge.
Li Xueming's pupils contracted. When on earth was he slashed? I couldn't even see it!
His physical body and reflexes were the strongest among everyone present, yet he hadn't been able to perceive the opponent's speed at all.
With Death holding the Sword of Decay as it arrived at the palace gates, none of them dared to make a move.
It stopped in its tracks, swept its gaze over the remaining six, and said flatly, “You will follow me from now on.”
Having spoken, it gave the six no opportunity to refuse and walked toward the hall where the councilmen were meeting.
The Sword of Decay in its hand vanished.
Only after Death disappeared around the corner did Wen Yu speak up, trembling, “Brother Li, are we really just going to let her in like this?”
The others looked at Li Xueming. He pondered for a moment, then gritted his teeth. “Follow her!”
“Brother Li, can we even beat her if we go up?” one of the youths said, somewhat reluctantly.
“Who said anything about fighting her? She is our boss from now on. Of course we're going up to cheer for our boss!” Li Xueming dashed forward with large strides.
He understood that a massive upheaval was likely about to take place in the upper echelons of the Nanming Kingdom. Stepping forward to declare allegiance now was far better than trying to join after the dust settled.
