Chapter 10 · Volume 1

Contention for the Prayer Mats

Why hasn't the famous teacher arrived yet?
Probably because two important students haven't arrived yet.
While Yuan Heng was musing, she looked off toward the entrance of Purple Heaven Palace.
The two young attendants who had been waiting there for a moment, seeing that no one else was coming, were about to close the doors.
However, right at that moment, two Daoists who looked like they were wearing very little fabric—or rather, quite generous with showing skin—walked in.
One had a head of silver hair, looking like an elegant, delicate white flower, though a subtle glint of sharpness lurked within his narrow eyes.
The other had hair as dark as ink, wearing floating robes of blue and gold. His features were warm and gentle, a faint smile hovering between his eyes, his face radiating boundless compassion...
The two of them really looked quite generous with what they revealed, except their clothes were somewhat tattered and ragged.
They certainly gave off a wind-blown, travel-worn impression.
Seeing these final two arrivals, Yuan Heng's heart instantly surged with excitement.
It's here, it's here! The world-famous “Saint Crying” segment is finally here!
As soon as the two entered, they realized they were late. Stepping closer, they saw that all six prayer mats at the front were occupied. The two exchanged a glance, instantly confirming their mutual understanding.
Immediately, the silver-haired Daoist with the delicate white-flower face began to sob softly, his eyes turning red in an instant. “Senior Brother, ah, life is so bitter! Our West suffers so bitterly!”
Zhunti pulled out a small handkerchief and turned toward the crowd, exposing half of his face like a clear lotus emerging from water, a single clear tear dropping right from the corner of his eye...
“To think that overnight, our West had its spirit veins completely destroyed, leaving thousands of li of scorched, bitter land... You and I, brothers, work from dawn to dusk, desperate to revive the West. We rushed with all our might, yet we were still one step too late. We don’t even have a single seat...”
“Not one of these six prayer mats belongs to our West! Sob sob... Senior Brother, is Heaven truly determined to destroy our West?”
Listening to their form of address, Yuan Heng matched the two Daoists with their identities... So the silver-haired white flower was Zhunti, and the other must be Jieyin.
Giving him an Oscar for best actor would be well-deserved!
Jieyin wore a pained expression, his eyes filled with sorrow. “Junior Brother, perhaps this is simply our fate. We are blessed with little luck and shallow affinity, and the living beings of our West... Ah, let it be, let it be.”
The two put on a synchronized performance. Even though Yuan Heng knew there was a fair amount of acting involved, she couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for them.
The West really was bitter, after all.
Hearing this, many of the surrounding primordial powerhouses turned to look, gazing at these two weeping Western Daoists... Some felt compassion, while others felt contempt.
If one could simply resort to such tactics and demand opportunities just because they arrived late and couldn't win by force, then they could cry too.
What was a little dignity worth, anyway?
Surely no one would be stupid enough to hand over an opportunity they had already secured just because someone cried a couple of lines, right?
Surely not, right? Surely not.
“You two... Sigh. Fellow Daoists, I have a prayer mat here. I shall yield it to the two of you.”
The powerhouses displaying disdain: “...”
Wait, there really is someone that stupid?
Hongyun, who occupied one of the six prayer mats, couldn't bear the sight. He was naturally open-minded, kind, and benevolent; seeing the two in such a state, he inevitably felt compassion.
He stood up to relinquish his seat, completely failing to notice his good bestie Zhenyuanzi standing behind him with an expression of utter frustration.
Friend Hongyun, they are acting! It's all an act!
Sigh...
Oh well. If he wasn't of such a disposition, he wouldn't be the Hongyun he knew.
Both Jieyin and Zhunti were stunned for a moment, then overjoyed. Rushing forward, Zhunti, being a man of action, immediately cupped his hands and thanked him loudly, “Thank you, Fellow Daoist Hongyun!”
“Fellow Daoist Hongyun is truly noble and righteous! My senior brother and I thank you on behalf of all the living beings of the West!”
While thanking him, Zhunti pushed his senior brother down onto the prayer mat, without the slightest hint of embarrassment.
Yuan Heng watched the bright, cheerful guy Hongyun turn around casually and sit down grinning next to his best friend, chatting with him from time to time.
She could only feel that a certain cautious master's summary was spot on:
“In the past, a certain Hong fellow, a good-natured man, was ultimately plotted against—how tragic...”
The seeds of disaster were about to be planted.
Having settled his senior brother, Zhunti looked at the other people on the prayer mats. He glanced at the Three Pure Ones; Taiqing and Yuanshi were closing their eyes to rest, not caring at all about the big drama he and his brother had just performed.
Only Tongtian was playing with a small sword in his hand, looking at him with a half-smile, as if eagerly wishing he would go look for trouble.
Zhunti: “...” Can't mess with him, next.
He looked toward Nuwa, but before he could say anything, he saw Fuxi behind her strumming the strings of a zither, his eyes sharp as he met his gaze directly.
Nuwa's eyes carried a teasing glint, looking equally ready to fight if provoked. Not easy to mess with either.
Zhunti: “...”
Alright, none of the ones in front are to be messed with, which leaves you, Fellow Daoist Kunpeng!
Zhunti's gaze fell upon Kunpeng on the last prayer mat. “Fellow Daoist, our West is impoverished. I wonder if you could yield this seat to our West?”
“No!”
Kunpeng rejected him cleanly and decisively, but Zhunti acted as if he hadn't heard a thing. He brandished his Seven Treasures Divine Tree and made a move, sweeping Kunpeng away in the blink of an eye.
“What? Fellow Daoist says yes? Then thank you, Fellow Daoist! All the living beings of our West will be deeply grateful to you!”
In a flash, Zhunti firmly sat down on it, a grateful smile still on his face.
Kunpeng, who had been caught off guard and swept away in an instant: “...”
Damn it!
The atmosphere instantly grew tense. Even the others who didn't have prayer mats felt an impulse to compete.
Those prayer mats clearly held great opportunity. Since he could snatch one, why couldn't they...
Just as Kunpeng was about to retaliate, he saw someone sitting on the central C-position at the front without anyone realizing when he had appeared.
Yuan Heng's eyes lit up as she looked at him. The famous teacher! The famous teacher who had finally answered their long calls!
He had arrived!
Hongjun was dressed in a Hunyuan Daoist robe, his frosted hair falling over his shoulders, his appearance indistinguishable between young and old, his expression tranquil and unruffled.
“The seats are set... All future lectures shall follow the seating of today!”
Ah... then they couldn't fight for them anymore. The expressions of the powerhouses dimmed for a moment, feeling quite disappointed.
Kunpeng, filled with rage and resentment, went off to find another place to nest.
Looking at Hongjun on the high seat, Yuan Heng subconsciously sat up straight, like an elementary school student seeing her teacher, wanting to show her best side.
Her eyes were bright, staring straight at him.
Come on, this is the beginning of her path to becoming a powerhouse~
Hongjun, keenly noticing her gaze: “...”
There really is no need to be so passionate.
Still, she must be the living being who completed the primordial Dao of Life.
Her body was enveloped in pure Dao charm, naturally drawn to by all living spirits—a truly wonderful fortune...
Seeing Yuan Heng's eyes filled with a thirst for knowledge and such a firm determination toward the Dao, Hongjun couldn't help but feel a touch of satisfaction from the bottom of his heart.
Not bad, not bad. A good seedling.
Very good, a sense of accomplishment achieved.
The Dao Ancestor began his sermon.
